I'm using the SanDIsk Ultra: https://www.amazon.de/dp/B0B7NV73PJ/ref=pe_27091401_487027711_TE_SCE_dp_i2

Formatted as exFAT.
but regardless of the game I've seen videos people setting up the MIG Switch they put in the SD card just the "update.s2" file and it lights up blue then it creates the file ".NXINDEX" then they delete the "update.s2" file and install the games.

For me it lights up white 3 long times and then I get the "The game card couldn't be read." and when I check the SD card there is no ".NXINDEX" file. Do you have any idea why this could hap

do you think I can run games without the ".NXINDEX" file?
It would seem like you cant, as it's not working for you. I'm not the most techinically knowledable.

I recommend reformating the SD card and trying again from the beginning.

From the official website:

INSTALLING/UPDATING CART FIRMWARE :

  1. Place the update.s2 file onto the root folder of the microSD card for the Mig Flash
  2. Insert the microSD card back into the Mig Flash
  3. Power up the Mig Flash by inserting it into the Switch console or Mig Dumper
  4. The Mig Flash LED light will flash blue for a short moment
  5. When updating is finished, the LED light will stop flashing and remain blue
  6. Eject the Mig Flash and it will function normally again

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS :

Setup:
  1. Prepare microSD card
  2. Format microSD card with the exFAT filesystem
  3. Place XCI game files in the root of the microSD filesystem
  4. Ensure the game files follow the naming scheme with "XXX.xci", "XXX (Initial Data).bin", "XXX (Certificate).bin", "XXX (Card ID Set).bin", "XXX (Card UID).bin" (as instructed in the section “Backup your games”
  5. Optionally, you can create XXX.xci folder, and place the relevant game files in there

New here. Just got my Dumper about a week ago, I've had the MiG switch for months but no files to use it with, never tried using it before today. No instructions and couldn't find anything except this thread, so bear with me.

I have no idea what I'm doing. Do I just connect it as an external storage and copy the files from the dumper (Files show up as a bunch of letters numbers like 37A846F727B5F0FC.xci)? Do I need to run special software? Do I need to use NXDT Host for anything if I'm just dumping the files from my own cartridge to my computer so I can copy the to my SD card to use on my Mig Switch?

As far as I know, you just put the game cart into the dumper, connect to the PC, copy the files from it and rename them to whatever you like. Just make sure that you follow the pattern mentioned on the MIG Switch (or MIG Flash as they call themselves nowadays) website: "XXX.xci", "XXX (Initial Data).bin", "XXX (Certificate).bin", "XXX (Card ID Set).bin" and "XXX (Card UID).bin", where XXX is the name of the game. To keep things organized on your microSD card, you can put the files into the folder named "XXX.xci".

Before you copy the games to the SD card, make sure that you have the latest firmware (1.1.5 is currently the latest). Here's how to do the update once you get the update.s2 file:
  1. Place the update.s2 file onto the root of your microSD card;
  2. Insert the microSD card back into the MIG Switch;
  3. Insert the MIG Switch into the Switch console or MIG Dumper;
  4. The MIG Switch LED light should flash blue for a short moment;
  5. When updating is finished, the LED light will stop flashing and remain blue;
  6. Eject the MIG Switch and now you can copy the games to the microSD card.
Before you copy the files to your SD card, make sure that it's formatted as exFAT. After that, put the microSD card into the MIG Switch and put the MIG Switch into the Switch console. If you did everything correctly, your game(s) should appear.

What is the consensus when it comes to bans? If I use a full genuine dump and play offline only, am I at risk? Or do you I have to delete network settings and never connect again to be safe? I'm reading some information online and it is a bit confusing.

Ideally i'd just like to know what i should/shouldn't do as someone who doesn't play online but would like to connect to the internet without risk.

There is no consensus, just a lot of conflicting reports.
At the very least, there is agreement that mixed or incomplete dumps will ban you.
MigFlash say public dumps won't ban you but there are reports otherwise.
As for staying offline, it doesn't matter. The logs will be generated and sent the next time you go online, with no way to clear them. If you have dodgy logs on an unhacked Switch, you can consider it already banned.

I have a problem with my MIG switch card
Post automatically merged:

can someone send me his .NXINDEX file without any game registered in it (The file created just after the update) for testing purposes. Thanks!
This is the best I can share since my MIG is packed away for the move

Have you ever seen the blue light? This is screaming sd card issue, either hardware or formatting.
