Stokesy mentioned here that the sensor bar doesn't actually sense anything, but he didn't mention what it actually does. Well, all the sensor bar is, is two sets of infrared LEDs. The remotes themselves actually do all of the work. They sense the infrared light and figure out where they are in relation to the bar.
here's a video of someone showing this by using two tv remotes (that also use infrared LEDs) in place of the sensor bar.

then this got me thinking. you could obviously set up your own sensor bar, but you could experiment with the distance between LEDs and with the "brightness" of them. I'm interested to see what some people come up with.
