People often talk about video games they consider overrated. But I rarely see people talking about video games that are overshilled: Video games that only shills (journalists, internet influencers etc) are shilling so hard that they make them sound like they're the most popular, important video games of all times. But in reality these video games are generic, mediocre games at best and they're not even as popular as the shill lie about.

So the question is: Which video games are in your opinion the most overshilled ones. Three examples that come to my mind are The Last of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn and To the Moon.

I get what you're going for here, but your three examples are clearly not accurate to the description. Just going by the most basic metric of Steam reviews, Horizon is at "Very Positive" after 89,456 reviews that are not by journalists or internet influencers. To The Moon is at an "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating after 59,872 again non-journalist and non-influencer reviews. And The Last of Us Part I is at "Mostly Positive" after 31,939 reviews.

I feel like you're maybe just looking for another unpopular opinions thread? The consensus for those games clearly does seem to be positive. I would be interested to see some examples where critics gave a game 8s, 9s, and 10s, where the public opinion ended up being in the trash though. I kinda thought Skyward Sword fell into that category, but looking at user scores on Metacritic, it seems like it is generally well-liked at an average of 8.1 out of 10.

If we're talking actually "overshilled": Kane and Lynch springs to mind. Massive marketing campaign, huge pressure on sites and reviewers to give high scores, mediocre game, zero lasting impact.

But I think you mean "overrated" and just want to rant about popular games you dislike.

Leave it to the TF2 community to tell you why Valve should babysit an almost 20 year old game with major content updates.
The TF2 community is riddled with a massive bot problem, same applies to older games like COD Modern Warfare. Every lobby you visit has cheaters and bots, so I doubt we'll ever see a future for TF2, it's almost a 20-year old game by this point.

Valve has been dealing with the bots lately, to some success. I do think they have some moral obligation to keep things running while they're still selling skins, but it's mostly the people complaining about the lack of updates that I worry about. TF2 has a lot of stuff in it already and is basically a finished game.

Valve gave up on CS 1.6, CS Source, prettymuch all their old multiplayer games and that's fine, they left them in playable states and the CS/Dota/DoD communities are happy with it. TF2 isn't really suitable as a live service like people want it to be.

I just looked up Call of Duty on Metacritic and while the average score is not as high as it used to be, they are STILL giving high marks to Call of Duty games. There is something funky going on with that.

Rise of the Robots was hyped for nearly a year by the games press before its dreadful release on multiple platforms. They even got Queen's Brian May to shill for it.

LOL! I can't speak to the last one, but you couldn't possibly be more wrong about the first two incredible games with lasting impact unless you also included GTA5, Red Dead Redemption II and both Mario Galaxy's (feel free to edit your original post to include them).

The first game that comes to my mind is Final Fantasy VII Remake for the PC. Was it a good game? Sure, it was a good game. Was it the best game ever, a perfect (or almost perfect) 10 out of 10 like some review sites said? No. Will I purchase Part 2 for the PC when it releases? Yes I will. Call me crazy.
