The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes online play is region locked

zelda-triforce-heroes.jpg
In a less than shocking turn of events, Nintendo has decided to restrict online play in the new The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes game to players of the same region.

Although it's supposed to be to reduce latency and improve the game experience, this means you won't be able to play with your online buddy across the pond when the game hits shelves on October 22nd. This is coming from the only game company that still deploys region locking restrictions on its other consoles and games.

What do you think of Nintendo's region locking practices and is it time for them to rethink their policies?

I'd price a game cheaper when it uses an old existing engine, same sprites/graphics as earlier released game, and low-quality features like region-locked online, no voice chat, etc.
So a lot of sequels to games in general? Region-lock and voice chat shouldn't be judge of a whole game.

More like because it's just a glorified (if even that) version of Four Swords (minus a sword because purple Link was busy with something else). It's not a full game from what we've seen so far; it's more like what SHOULD have been packed with Link Between Worlds much like Four Swords was with LTTP.

Region lock for online? My my~

As someone who's only friends are online I fear I no longer have interest in this. I shouldn't like to feel like much more of a loser.
And on that note: it's quite perverse for Australia, as the irony therein is that pal territories are further away than the others making the lag argument effectively moot.

Given how Splatoon players seem to disconnect often from matchups it may be for everyone's best interest to play within our own respective regions. I can see why this would upset others but at the end of the day you should want the best gameplay experience possible and this will help ensure that.
I'm sorry, but have you actually played Splatoon? I've been playing since launch and only disconnected twice since launch. Most people reporting regular disconnection often leave out that they have unstable or slow internet, which can contribute to regular disconnection.

On topic, there should be an option for worldwide play. Removing it outright doesn't solve the problem, it only hinders the online experience. And region-locking is a relic of the past, that needs to stop.

I think region-lock is necessary when there are 4 persons playing in an action game.
Just look at Smash Bros.

and no one was surprised.

Nintendo has shit online. Unless you enjoy rubberbanding and disconnections I wouldn't play with anyone farther than a couple rooms away anyway.

I still remember playing Smash Bros on my 3DS with my buddy in the same room as me and we had some latency issues from time to time. What.

Well with R5 coming out, I don't think that would be a big deal. lol Kinda lame for most others though. I used to play MH4U with my buds all the time, and they all have American systems. My system is imported.
