Nintendo's upcoming entry into The Legend of Zelda series has just received a new trailer that offers more information on the world and gameplay. The video details elements such as a cooking system, fast travel, equipment that affects your stats, and new echo powers that Zelda has access to, as well as showcasing some of Hyrule's familiar locations. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom will launch for the Nintendo Switch on September 26th.
To be fair, Pokémon almost did something new with Legends, then failed to commit. SV should have been new but was ruined by a lot of lazy decisions and poor execution. Glad Palworld finally gave Pokémon fans a new experience
And it's still doing new styles in sidegames. And as we saw with ScVi it transfers over popular mechanics/changes as they use the Legends Series to practice new functions. Legends ZA is likely to be mroe experimentation.
That aside, Legends Arceus didn't sell as well as a mainline as I remember.
I think people need to understand that for decades there's been 2 "main" Zelda series.
The "big" Zelda games running on current hardware, while looking technically impressive (or at least decent):
Zelda 1&2, ALttP, OoT/MM, WW, TP, SW, BOTW, TOTK
And the "Handheld" Zelda games which stick to the top down view gameplay and mostly add fun gimmicks and gameplay mechanics:
LA, OoA/OoS, MC, PH, ST, ALBW
Since the Switch is a hybrid it's home for both series now. I'm glad that after 11 years (if you don't count remakes like Link's Awakening) we finally get a new "Handheld" Zelda. I usually enjoy those more than the "big" games.
The people wanting remakes or ports over this is wild. I want a new game over the same game again any day. I didn't want links awakening switch at all either it would be a lot better if we had another albw like game instead that year.
Also it's not a spinoff. The reveal trailer specifically said it's the next mainline Zelda game. It's as much a spinoff as the Oracle games or Minish cap.
I've never wanted this game. I never wanted BotW or TotK either, as none of these are what I'm looking for in Legend of Zelda.
All I want is another traditional game. Another game like Twilight Princess, The Wind Waker. Or like Link's Awakening or A Link Between Worlds. That is, a closed-world game with Heart Pieces and ammo upgrades and stuff, with classic dungeon design, and with Link as the player character.
Not this.
I might have played through BotW and TotK, once each, just to see what the hubbub was about (and they were real slogs for multiple reasons), but I'm never touching this abomination.
When the straying results in something much more tedious and overall nowhere near as enjoyable, than sticking to a well-polished and perfectly functional formula? YES, straying is inherently awful.
Legend of Zelda first strayed with Skyward Sword, adding limited stamina, the tiny Pouch, breakable shields, and resource grinding to upgrade gear. That game still had moments of greatness, particularly in the series-staple dungeons, as it still utilised the fantastic traditional formula, but on the whole the greatness was largely smothered by the unnecessary experimentation, the straying from formula that gave us masterpieces like Twilight Princess, The Wind Waker, and Majora's Mask.
A Link Between Worlds was the last hurrah of the fantastic formula before BotW (and TotK) tossed the baby out with the bathwater to start anew, with a truly horrendous open-world format where world traversal is now a tedious slog due to both size and limited stamina, not to mention not knowing where anything is due to the lack of dev-placed map markers, the insanely fragile weapons and shields, and the utterly forgettable and stripped-down Divine Beasts/Temples.
I played through the entirety of these two games, and there was not a single thing enjoyable about them - not one thing they do better than Twilight Princess or The Wind Waker. Heck, if you want a FUN exploration game, go play The Wind Waker HD; the Great Sea is significantly smaller, yet it uses the smaller size much more efficiently and effectively. Sailing's fun with the Swift Sail, exploring is fun, the dungeons are fantastic, and combat is leagues more engaging with the counter mechanic and not having to worry about your sword breaking after 5 hits or so.
And now Nintendo's straying again, except in a different way; I don't foresee this being any better than the classics, not at all.
I'd agree with you...if we were ALSO getting traditional titles alongside the experimental ones. But we're not, so...yeah, I can't agree with you, unfortunately.
I wouldn't mind experiments like BotW/TotK and EoW nearly as much if traditional titles were released in-between them, but that's just not the case. Instead, the experiments have effectively replaced the classics, which just makes me dislike them more.
I never played SS so I'd want to try it with traditional controls than motion controls. Bad call on Nintendo making SS limited to the Wiimote / motion controls originally.

remember how i said the motion controls were bad in tp? they are even worse in SS! they added motion for bomb throwing where you had to bowl it (most of the time it didn't work) gliding (which you basically had to turn your remote upside down for it to fucking work correctly) and even SWIMMING YES SWIMMING! i actually threw my remote once when playing it (at the sofa) your not missing anything!

In addition to what Blade said, for SS HD they attempted to tie motion controls to the right analog stick, for those using Pro Controllers and stuff.
Yeah, that ain't incredibly awkward at all. Good attempt, I guess, but it didn't pay off at all.
