The Last Story is a new RPG for the Nintendo Wii developed by Mistwalker. It is being headed and designed by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi. Ironically, the title is very much like Final Fantasy. Now, the first trailer has been released, showing off some gameplay. Have a look below-

The Last Story is set on Ruri Island. Located at the mouth of a harbor which serves as the only entrance point to a mountainous continent, Ruri Island is in a strategic location, and is thus a place of great power and wealth. The island is ruled governed by Count Arganon. Different from the mainland nobles, Arganon appears to have great ambitions. The story is going to focus on this island.

The game will be an action RPG and is being published by Nintendo. Not much is actually known about the specific gameplay elements that set The Last Story apart from other games yet. But it does feature a variety of different gameplay types. There appears to be town exploration as well. It will be very story driven, with character dialogs frequently popping up randomly. AI characters will talk amongst themselves in battles and while you're traveling around the world. Mistwalker intends to create an emotional experience and hopes for players to become attached to the characters in the game. They cite their goal as wanting to deliver an experience where you don't feel lonely during the game. [/p]

Expect The Last Story to release in Japan sometime this year unless it's delayed. No word on a release outside of Japan yet, but the odds are pretty good. Too early to tell now anyways.

Well...this looks better than I expected.
Of course, can't really tell with the low res graphically, but the gameplay looks like it might be interesting.
I like how you actually bump into people when you bump into people. :3

Well, I thought the graphics looked amazing watching most the video embedded...then I watched it on Youtube and now I think it looks amazing...for the Wii. Still, the graphics look great and the whole game looks pretty fun.

Looks great in every way. I also really like the idea of a cover-system, even though it is a little unusual in sword-battles but it seems like you use it to either ambush enemies or to hide from them, which I think could be a great addition to a combat-system!

You can also find this trailer with better quality on the official website.

I'm really intrigued by the battle system! According to IGN's translations of the official blog (I know, IGN are crap, but anyway) it's based on the enemy's line of sight. And the main character has the ability to draw enemy's attention towards themselves, away from, say, the mage that's about to cast some sort of devastating spell etc. I'm pretty sure I saw those lines of sight (literally lines) in this trailer. But what didn't occur to me is the stealth element this introduces! This game looks great! If you look on the official website, they have a map of the main town on Ruri Island. If that is all fully rendered and explorable, then I'll be very happy! Although, I hope the game isn't too limited, i.e. I hope there's more than just one town to explore.

its like stealth tactics. you "plan" your procedure in battle, and command your party to do something every step of the way.

hiding while in battle is AWESOME.
    ranged attacks! AWESOME.
    line of sight! AWESOME!

*kinda reminds me of Fable 2.*

    Will be buying this.

That was nothing like what I was expecting. I am now officially psyched for it [IMG]

It reminds me more of Monster Hunter or Valhalla Knights then Final Fantasy.

It's been a long time since I was excited for a Wii game... But I think this just made the list.

Hopefully they don't skimp on localization costs and screw the voice overs.

WOW! When you look at this game the first sense you get is like a Monster Hunter style game mixed with Final Fantasy! I am looking forward for this game, assuming its coming in 2010 in Japan id expect maybe Q3 2011 or if we are really lucky Q2 2011.
Wii's lineup for this and next year looks really good now! [IMG]
