Same thing. I went to the site, typed up Devil May Cry 3, and Final Fantasy X. It said "X store has it". Went to their PS2 bin, nothing. Asked the guy, "we don't have it."

I think it's just their site that sucks.

It could have simply been stolen from the store. It happens. Most likely, it was a store employee who took it in the first place if it is actually missing, but you can't discount the possibility that it was shoplifted either.

When an item is stolen, it won't minus off the inventory unless a manager corrects the item counts. Counts don't get corrected very often in many stores. Usually, they only thoroughly do inventory once a year (around tax time). Many times, they let such items just stay on the inventory list without correcting it because they are afraid of what their district manager will say about the "missing" items. Too many items missing from the store will affect their operating budget and/or future inventory allotments, so they lie about item counts, which is also known as "cooking the books". It's not legal, but most stores "cook the books" to some extent or another.

There are other reasons the count could be off too. Like 2 of any given item was on the shipping manifest, but only 1 actually came in the box and whoever checked in the box didn't notice the miscount. It could be "lost" in the store somewhere, having fallen into a "quiet place" between the shelves or something. Possibly, it was on reserve for someone who never came to pick it up and it's sitting in limbo in a cabinet somewhere.

Technically, the employees are supposed to write down any inventory discrepancies that may arise during their shift and report it to the manager, but most never do. The managers are supposed to search the store for the missing items, but will usually only do that when it comes to covering their own ass.

Here's an even funnier story.

I went looking for Castlevania: CoD at the Gamestop near my house. The guy says there are none in stock in the store. Then I went to another gamestop a little further away and asked for the game. The guy working there offered to print me out a list of all the places that had the game in stock. And oddly enough, it said the store that I first went to had it in stock! The balls on some people...

I don't know how the computer system works at EB Games, but I've worked in retail before (at Meijer, it's like a Wal-Mart for those not in the midwest).

Basically, the computer system exists but doesn't allow for most of the functionality you'd want in a computer system; namely, searches can only be done via UPC codes. Additionally, if the item is found in the computer and it shows a BOH (balance on hand), there's a good chance it's wrong, either due to shoplifting, breakage, error, etc. not to mention they take a few days to update in the system when something actually does get sold. It might be a little easier to keep track of at a place that has a smaller volume of products like an EB, but I can't tell you how many times I've scanned a pallet of mulch or something and seen a BOH of -5 when there's clearly a few hundred in front of me.

It's a nice system to have in place, in a way, but very flawed and I think you'll find that anywhere you go. Unfortunately, most customers don't realize that and think I'm jerking them around when I'm telling them we don't have any stock of an item.

Working there, I know a little something...

Sometime the computer will lie to you. It gets updated nightly, so it might not have the right amount. Say, it said they had 1 copies, it mighta been sold out before you got there and the computer will still say they are stocked until tomorrow. That's why you gotta call and have the LOOK and know for a fact they have it or not. There were so many, so many, so many games stocked incorrectly, with excess and missing.... Oh GOD it was a nightmare to sort them.

@ Yaymii: the website is updated nightly too, it was probably wrong. Although, he WAS wrong about Bluray. they are TOUGH as HELL.

I had a similar experience with Gamestop/EB Games not updating their website about in stock products. I checked their website everyday for 2 weeks and every time it showed the same store having the 2 games in stock but the girl there said that someone purchased both of them already. You should check out other local Gamestop/EB Games, but call them before you go all the way down there just to find out they don't have it.

Their website is often wrong. I went at the only store in my area that the site said still had Fable 1 in stock and when I got there, they didn't have it. Ended up pirating it. I don't think he would lie to you about that because it makes him lose a sale. It's the same reason he told you the stuff about the Blu-rays. He just wants to sell.
Same thing happened to me not too long ago. Looked online for a copy of Tales of Symphonia for GC, they said they had it at the Gamestop right up the street from my Uni. I went up there only to find out that they don't even have a GC section anymore.
