Shawshank Redemption: personally my favorite [IMG]

Forrest Gump: A classic film of a stupid but great man
    Warning: Spoilers inside!

Saving Private Ryan: Is easily one of (if not the) best war film ever made

Black Hawk Down: Another war film but is still a great

The Truman Show: Jim Carrey prances on for the performance of a lifetime (nudge nudge)

[IMG] remind me if I've missed any (no horror movies, these are CLASSIC films)

I got to agree with you about those movies, those are amongst my favourites as well (except The Truman show, it's great but not sure about having it on my top 10, but it's definitly at top 15 at least =) )

I can't say which my absolute favourite is... because i don't know, but for now i'd say Saving Private Ryan or... actually, Avatar is so god damn good, so i'd say that =)

(also, if you're using "spoilers" like that, you're better without them in this case [IMG] takes as much space, but is less annoying, faster and easier to get a quick look at what the links are without hitting the "show"-button, just a thought though)

I can't do the poll, since i've never seen any of those movies.

I'd have to add to that list though.

    The Dark Knight FTW

From the entire history of motion pictures you've picked only FIVE! I'd say you'd missed quite a lot. Anyway, my recommendation for a classic would be The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Even though Clint Eastwood's acting is more wooden than a tree and the audio dubbing is laughable, the film is still breath-taking even today.

I chose Shaving Ryan's Privates out of your list.

I think the ones you picked are good movies, though I don't think Black Hawk Down belongs on that list. But where is Taxi Driver? Space Odyssey? Clockwork Orange? Or in terms of the more mainstream stuff, where is Terminator 2, LOTR Trilogy, Star Wars, Dark Knight etc. If we are talking about greatest of the greatest, I feel that the limited scope of the poll kind of shoots itself in the foot before the get go.

Really? I couldn't stand that one because it was just...I can't really put a finger on it, it was a combination of a lot of small things. For example, the fact that they used a completely different actress for Soo Yung ruined any chance of it being considered a part of the Rush Hour "canon" for me. And she's just a little girl in part 1. Presumably a few years pass between part 1 and 3, but in part 3 she's all grown up--how many years have passed, 15?!

The Shawshank Redemption was definitely one of my favorites. While we're on Stephen King, I also think The Green Mile is up there among the greatest films.

You'd need to add Flesh Gordon then...

I have to admit being shocked that some people haven't seen any of the films in the poll list!

There are a lot of omissions, I can't belive the original Robocop or BTTF aren't on there for a start.

Star Man, Dark City, Let The right One In...

Ahhhh, too many good films, I cannot pick my favourite. I have too many DVD/BRs to list comfortably.

Edit: Green Mile! Cannot believe I forgot that one.

Re: porno spoofs- that would be great but having watched the pre channel for the last few months all the names I see are dreadfully uninspired.

    Anyhow
Shawshank Redemption- not sure I have seen this all the way through which is telling in an of itself (falling asleep and not rectifying such a situation counts as turning off halfway through in my book.

Forrest Gump- seems like a modern telling of the Paul Bunyan or going further back some of the polytheistic religions creation stories.

Saving Private Ryan- a mission film set in a war. Pretty but otherwise no redeeming features. The dirty dozen or the great escape or pretty much any of the black and white era films I would sooner go.

Black Hawk down- bored me senseless, I would look to TV for war programmes- Band of brothers, Generation Kill or possible even the unit for such things.

The Truman Show- passable in my opinion but being offered up as a candidate for best film leaves me shaking my head. To me it was a twist on last man alive/sane, dystopia films or possibly even post apocalypse films which means it is completely blown out of the water by other contenders from those genres and even more so by TV shows with similar themes.

I think it could be best said that any of those of films would not be on or high on my list of things to watch.
Anyhow best film, this would be a film I could have no objections watching at any point save because I had watched it not long ago. I have yet to see a film (or any form of entertainment for that matter) that I would indulge in regardless of mood but for one that covers most of the time it would have to be Fight Club. There are countless better examples of every genre/theme but for all around just able to watch it that would be my pick.

Forrest Gump was really funny and never got old for me.
Private Ryan was a great movie too though...
