What happened to the good old days of file sharing? One of your mates would copy a few of your CDs or Vids and would let you browse his collection in return. This would then be done by the next mate and so on and so on. Pretty soon we all had fairly vast music and video libraries with no risk of legal ramifications. Then there was the old video store rent and copy and then propagate to other friends and colleagues. And what about the Malaysian trip, returning with a couple of CD wallets full of games and videos or the dodgy market vendor who would hand you an A4 sheet full of titles.

It looks as if the days of internet sharing are all but over with no safe haven in site. First Napster and Gnetulla were under attack and then torrents. Now it looks as if the mass upload servers such as megaupload and rapidshare are under attack and usenet will only be next.

So what are they doing? Stopping file sharing or just driving it back underground? I believe it will just hand power back to the dodgey bootleggers who are prepared to dance with the law in order to make a quick profit. Better to leave it as a non profit free for all. I can’t see it having any massive impact on sales either way.

It's called newsgroups.... They wont ever stop piracy altogether but they might be able to stop clueless people who don't know how to use other sources. Also the reason people don't swap stuff now is because it's so easy to do it yourself now.
