Some very light spoilers for some things in the first episode and shots from several episodes after in that. If you want to go in cold then by all means do so.

So the first four episodes are floating around and I saw them all. It is supposedly based on a relatively recent book series, one I have not read or read anything else from the author of (though given this is their only series that kind of went without saying).

General premise. Few hundred years in the future. Earth is the main player but Mars is "an independent military power" and there is also a third player in "the (asteroid) belt" which has increasing aspirations about independence, though not the most chance of realising them.

Between this and a few of their new shows it seems Syfy remembered what they do and are making scifi again which is nice. This seems to have a higher budget, or at least better sets, than killjoys or dark matter though.
Some are openly discussing the idea that this might be the next Battlestar Galactica, I would not say that as it seems to be a slightly different show -- though politics/faction dynamics was never far from Battlestar I would have said it was more about survival (as in I would sooner compare it to something like the walking dead, or not as that show is awful) where this show leans even further into said politics/faction dynamics. Not sure what I would compare it to then however. I doubt it will be a mega smash but has all the makings of a fondly remember two or three series show.

Even without this being the December break/end of series for most other shows ( http://www.pogdesign.co.uk/cat/next-airing ) I would say pick it up, with it being the December break if you like sci fi then go for it.

So I just finished the first book and have long since finished the first series of the TV show. The show seems to take half of the first book and invent another character, or possibly use a character/while this was happening from another book, for the Earth side of things.
I can also say it was a great adaptation, some things made a bit more sense when reading the book but not necessarily in a good way -- the book is a POV book with a couple of characters (more in later ones it seems) so it can have internal monologues, for instance there is a scene in the TV show early on where one of the characters is in an escort's place after she killed a john, he pours a drink but as she is in a cheap place with low gravity it behaves a bit differently, the show shows this and implies not a lot but the book spells it out a bit more. That said other than having people talk to themselves like idiots or to others that know all this as they too have lived it for years then I have not seen a great way for TV shows to pull this off, though I did see that in the heart of the sea film a couple of weeks back and it did fairly well by having a character that did not know things along for the ride.

I absolutely adore this show. I binged watched the first season in a single day. I am a sucker for science fiction, and i really like the girl who plays Julie Mao's character, she is a half-french half-thai actress  It's just a shame that season 2 isn't airing until 2017 :(
