The 3DS has the potential to be Virtual Console goldmine.

It can play games from the,
    • NES - emulated (Ambassador)
    • GBA - emulated (Ambassador)
    • DS - backwards compatible
    • DSiWare - on the eShop
    • Game Boy - emulation
    • Game Boy Color - emulation
    • Sega Game Gear - announced
    • TurboGrafx-16 - announced
Not only that but it is the only handheld system capable of playing Virtual Boy games in 3D. Some PS2 and N64 games are being re-released (MGS3, OOT3D, SF3D, etc.). Nintendo has the potential to turn the system into a Virtual Console goldmine. They would be absurd not to take advantage of it.

    So uh, discuss?

However, true retro gamers will not be happy unless they release VC versions of various 2600, C64, Amstrad, BBC Micro/Acorn, ZX81, Amiga etc. games. I for one look forward to the day homebrew is made possible only for the fact that the screen size is large enough for pixel perfect C64 emulation, something that will never happen officially.

I don't think backwards compatibility would lend itself to the 3DS being a Virtual Console goldmine.

The system lends itself perfectly to SNES games as well, the absolute perfect button layout and screen resolution which means 1:1 scaling, the same for Sega Megadrive titles.

But knowing Nintendo they will deliberately reduce the screen quality like with the NES or GBA VC titles, to emulate the older displays. And there'll be no option to disable that.

More the reason to get homebrew running on the 3DS, the sooner the better!
