The 3 most promising console hacks of 2020

3 console hacks.png

Good news: half of this fever dream known as 2020 is over. Bad news: there’s still another half to go through. Thankfully, video games are here to cheer us up and even better are developments in the hacking scene which give us something to look forward to.

Here we discuss the 3 most promising console hacking news that we’ve seen in 2020 so far.

1. PlayStation 2 exploit without any additional tools

ps2 hax.PNG

First we go back a few console generations for a brand-new PS2 exploit. Developed by @CTurt, FreeDVDBoot allows you to run homebrew games from a burnt DVD on an unmodified PS2. No other tools needed; just slide the DVD in and boot.

And this method is not restricted to homebrew games either. Indeed, FreeDVDBoot also enables you to run backup copies of retail PS2 games. CTurt made such a video running a backup copy of Shadow of the Colossus:

Well, you might be wondering why this is promising at all. Afterall, the PS2 is a retro console and we’ll soon enter a new console generation. The answer is that FreeDVDBoot’s method could potentially work on every single PlayStation home console, from the PS1 down to the PS4. CTurt might look into this possibility and we’ll surely let you know if we hear more.

If you’re interested in learning more about FreeDVDBoot, head to our official discussion thread where you can also find a GitHub download link.

2. Kernel exploit for firmware 7.02 of the PlayStation 4

ps4 logo.PNG

TheFlow, mostly known for his activity in the PSVita scene, recently made public a kernel exploit he found on the PS4’s FW 7.02. This vulnerability was found back in June and TheFlow exposed the flaw to Sony's HackerOne bounty program. This helped Sony patch it in the PS4's 7.50 FW update.

However, TheFlow hinted that those still on lower firmware could use his discovery to jailbreak the console by combining it with a Webkit exploit for firmwares up to 6.72. It looks like it’s only a matter of time before such a jailbreak is made public.

In the meantime, you can join the discussion in our existing thread and find a link to more technical details about this kernel exploit.

3. 3DS emulator for the Switch is in the works

citra on switch.png

While the first two news revolved around PlayStation consoles, we’ll shift our attention to Nintendo’s latest one. The Switch is great for emulators thanks to its portability (we shared our top 5 ones recently) and one of the most promising emulators in the works for the Switch is Citra.

The latter is a popular 3DS emulator and GBAtemp member @m4xw is working on porting it to the Switch. His early progress showed great promise as a proof-of-concept, even if it contained a few bugs.

@m4xw is also sharing progress of his Citra port on his Patreon page before making a stable build publicly available. Head there if you want to get a peek or join our discussion here on GBAtemp.

That will probably be the rumored Xstation. Cyberdyne is making a real ODE as well that'll be a solderless solution when paired with the PSIO but it could be expensive.

When I read your post that's what I thought you meant but when I google Xstation nothing came up except some unrelated stuff.

I've done some further searching and finally found it.

The Xstation is the new project being teased on social media by 8BitMods the distributor of the new Sega Saturn ODE the Fenrir.

Not much is known about it other than the name and some teasing pictures of the board that has people thinking it's for the PS1 but Cyberdyn(creators of the PSIO
) are already feeling the heat.

That PS2 hack is fucking awesome. I wanna see that shit hit PS3 and PS4! Hell, get it on PS5!

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Why TF is this site of all places calling Citra a hack?

Citra's not the hack, getting it on the Switch is

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Why would you wanna play 3DS on anything but the 3DS though . . .
Its super easy to get one with CFW and you get the 3D, gyro, touch screen and dual screen without any hassle.
The DS was ok on emulator since it lacked the 3D and gyro i guess . . .

I'm just waiting for Citra to get better performance on android

Now I'm confused lol.

I assume you have to hack your switch to get citra, so I'm gonna go with hack.
No, Citra itself is not a hack. To categorize it as a hack (it's a homebrew) is misleading.

Tbh, 2020 has been one of the least impressive years for the scene but it's not over yet. 2019 will be hard to out-crap.

To be very fair SXOS deserves the best hack of 2020 for unlocking the unmodable units. I know this site is kinda anti SXOS but these are facts.

I call it a hack the citra thing cause he even like fixed their coding i mean citra aint meant to run on a switch and a switch is partly another portable console. One would generally not think powerful enough to run citra (my highpowered gpu sure but the switch?). So yeah.

that’s a hack...

giggles walks away

I've been enjoying using Citra (pc) on my 3DTV. Alot of games the second screen has pretty limited use and is fine to switch back and forth with a toggle. Havent run into a need for gyro, and touch screen is fine with a mouse (which I map to my right stick of my controller).

The 3d really stands out well on a 3dtv, I never really appreciated it on the handheld.

^ I use an elite controller with brook adapter to my ps4 pro using a USB port

it’s great for FPS Games imo and I don’t notice lag
Interesting idea. Just knowing my luck, if there is a ps4 game I'd actually want to play, it'd end up being one that requires the touch portion for some reason. Like, one can almost complete MGS 4 on a third party controller, except for the Mantis fight which forces motion controls. :nayps3:

Worth a mental note, though. Thank you. :yayone:

The touch portion can be mapped too, unless you're referring to swipes and gestures then just use a regular ps4 controller not a biggy

Imo, better to use this as an entry point to more permanent mods (FreeMCBoot/FreeHDBoot) so you're not putting any extra wear on the disk drive than you have to, but nice to not need to use the Agent Under Fire exploit or use an existing mod to set things up. Great Job!

Wow, this was a really interesting read. The PS2 DVD drive hack, in particular. It makes me think about whether or not it's a good idea to hold on to my PS4 when I buy the PS5 for the hopes that it will get hacked within ~1 yr or so. Although, by the time that happens, I could also probably pick up a PS4 for dirt cheap...

Anyone have any thoughts?
