Thanks to homebrew creators, the Nintendo Alarmo can now run DOOM

alarmo.png

Scene homebrew creator @GaryOderNichts is no stranger to getting custom software to run on platforms. particularly the Wii U. This time around, though, enthusiasts have gotten custom code to run on something even more unusual: the Nintendo Alarmo. Less than a month after the clock's release, users were doing technical teardowns and finding out how to run custom code on it. And of course, a method to run everyone's favorite, DOOM, on the Alarmo, was discovered. GaryOderNichts made a detailed breakdown about the process of how the Alarmo works, and then four days later, followed it up with a video of 1993's DOOM running on the clock. Not only can it run, but it can even be controlled, by the little button on top of the Alarmo. Because of course.

Eh, it was only a matter of time. The moment someone managed to play Doom using E. Coli was the moment that solidified the belief that you can play Doom on anything. Give it a few more years and people will find a way to play it on their dog's eyeballs.

Don't you like it because it's overused as a starting point for porting code onto another system?

That's a part of it. It's like a joke I've heard a million times that wore out its welcome years ago. "Doom ported to Ti Calculator!!!" "Doom ported to ATM machine!!!" "Doom played on Smart Refrigerator!!!" It's old and boring. Apart from that, the game itself is old and boring.

I think the reason why it's ported is because it's simple and well documented. You can easily just recompile opendoom

Now that it's cracked wide open do you think a homebrew scene will develop?

Would love alarmo Pokemon Red/blue with link cable support

If you're gonna have insomnia you might as well have insomnia in style

The specs actually appear to be superior to the game and watch from 2020
Alarmo:
32 mb of ram
4gb internal storage /emmc

2020 game & watch:
Two banks of 256KB flash
1380 kb sram
1mb serial flash
actually that would be cool, like you could upload your own sound and other stuff.

Great, now I want the Alarmo.

I know Doom is the litmus test but the Alarmo uses the same chipset as their Game and Watch consoles which means it could run those game collections as well.

Hmm, running the Mario/Zelda clock screens from the respective G&Ws would be more interesting than running games with bad controls

Can't say I didn't see this coming.
It was about to happen at some point. If the Alarmo had the same specs as the Game & Watch Zelda, of course it's going to be easy to figure out. Only problem, however, is that Nintendo were clever enough to protect the internal flash from being read. Something like a logic analyzer and reading each single bit would be time constraining. The funny part is that they didn't bother to add any signature checks into the system.

also if the dang thing wasn't overpriced and had a square screen lmfao
i bet they'll drop it close to christmas to create demand and artificial supply shortage

I'm sure a cease and desist is being drafted right now by Nintendo's lawyers :)
