But you can just make it a rule not to use items... like the snaking rule in the MK tournament.
A precision, in 4 players games, the observators can't see if a player use an item or not.
They could guess it, but they couldn't be sure. That's why no rules could be added for prohibit items.

We had a lot of internal debate over whether or not to break the poll results and end up with a 4-player game. We know people didn't want to use items, but we also had to deal with the fact that no referees on one-on-one matches was a recipe for a variety of headaches. We think that the system we worked out is as fair as can be with the options Nintendo has provided us.

It's really unfortunate that we didn't end up with 2-player no items, and we can't apologize enough for having to break that news.

I know you've gone this way to avoid having people lie about winning etc. but god damn those rules are the biggest piece of crap I've ever read.

So now we only play one game between each other before we are knocked out, thats shite.
Who the heck decides who plays who in the first match up, whats going to happen in later rounds when there is one good player and three average players the average player isn't going to want to play the harder person straight up, they're going to want to play the other average person, commence arguements.
Then you have the lame item factor, bloody hell do you know how easily a single game could be won or lost because of a lucky item.

I'll play because I like tetris, but I just have to say that this system is going to be more trouble than it is worth.

Note ALL IMO.

You do not decide yourself. The matches are 2 players! Please read the rules again.
If your match is "MC DUI vs Opium", then you'll play with Opium regardless of the players in the other match.

And I would like to remind you something. You sound extremely ungrateful. Look what we've done for you!
We've been working on this tourney for MONTHS (in the staff forum) and believe me it wasn't easy. All the staff has been thinking about it. You can't imagine how many hours it's taken us so far, even though the tournament hasn't started yet.
We're offering our time, our work, our money, and even some great prizes, and yet you're still not happy?

Our rules are complicated but believe me, we've studied hundreds of different possibilities and situations. This set of rules was the most flawless we could find.

Now please, stop thinking about the rules.
Think about the match you're going to play, get ready, and kick ass.
And eventually, win the tourney and pick up your favorite prize.

I wish you good luck.

Sorry for sounding ungrateful Costello, I'm just very disappointed with the final outcome. I thoroughly understand the amount of work you guys are doing to run this tournament and of course I am very appreciative.

Personally I think the tourny should have been between people on this site that we know and trust that way we don't have to worry about the bloody lying pricks.

Like I said I just wanted to point out my dissappointment with these rules, I just don't like the idea of having items in the matches. People saying the tournament should be based on luck as well as skill just need to learn how to play the game better, comparing the game to Mario Kart = not the same thing.

Anyways feel free to ignore my ranting, I'll be playing either way.

BTW after re-reading the rules I apologise for my comments earlier in the thread RE only playing 1 game and possible problems RE who plays who, I really should have read them more carefully

I gotta give you guys the credit you are due. While the rules are complex, they are efficient and balanced. Kudos on that!

I would like to have more than a maximum of three matches between people. I mean, c'mon. People have up to two weeks to organize a match, and then will spend all of 10 minutes per group? I think 3 would be better, first to 5 the best of all.

Just how I see it. Thank you all for all of your hard work in putting this together! When do we see who is in our first grouping?

Yep.

Btw, does it say WHO disconnected? If I recall correctly, it just says your opponent(s) disconnected....so how do you know who it was?

So what happens if you're spectating, but you get kicked out? Does that mean you get disqualified without even getting to play?

Ooooo.....

Disconects will be a big problem. It's not like a player gets dropped, the entire game ends.

The game just ends when even one person gets out.

Is there a faq where I can learn what each item does? It's too hectic online to pay attention to others screens while I'm trying to beat em.
Would have much prefered 1vs1 with no items but like stated, we can only blame Nintendo, I guess. Make due with whats available.
