Gaming Terraria - how do you place items in the background?

I've just got my physical copy of Terraria and am playing through the tutorial. I've got to the part where I have to place the wall at the back of my house, but when I place the wood blocks it just goes in the foreground like a wall. How do I place them in the background?

you gotta build a workbench and with that you should be able to turn wood into background panels.

and once you've done that, return terraria and get a pc version because its a million times easier to control and manage.
