It's not really about stopping piracy entirely (which is obviously impossible), it's about making it more of a hassle. Having to seek out and download cia files, transfer and install them is much more work than just loading freeshop and clicking Install on something. It helps make piracy less attractive for the more casual, less "lol why ever pay for anything" crowd, in the same way making it easier to purchase legal copies does. If you know nothing about modded consoles or hacking, having someone install Freeshop on your console is pretty much painless to use, while having to dig through often dubious websites for direct download links is much more likely to scare them off.

See that's only going to be an issue if you're a complete and utter beginner in the piracy world. Because if not, if you've been doing it for a long time, then using the old methods of seeking out the games and manually installing them isn't much more of a hassle. Takes a lil bit more time sure(not too much) but it's only going to make it unappealing if you're a complete newcommer to 3ds pirating. And if i can be completely honest, i don't think anyone is going to get into that when the console is pretty much dead now

As far as I understand, 3DS security is as of now *better* than Switch. I don't know why people keep saying 3DS "backported" it.

Switch requires a single genuine console certificate to download any game on the CDN. 3DS now requires a genuine ticket that corresponds to each individual game on a specific console. Its a far more granular system that is much more difficult to get away with sharing.

If anything Switch will eventually copy the 3DS system one day. They will need a firmware update to implement it though.

IT's not better, it's as good. And the 3ds did indeed backport it because the 3ds didn't have anything of the sort until the switch scene came along. The switch was the first, then the 3ds adapted it, though in a different way since, probably(and this is speculation on my part, correct me if i'm wrong), the 3ds doesn't have a cert that Nintendo can simply ban, hence why each game needs genuine tickets now

no we have a cert called local friend code seed_B it's just usless to ban cause we can just inject a donor one but the switch however uses a 100% console specific cert injecting a donor cert will brick your switch

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Aind that what people used to do in the old days? Rent games/movies, dump/rip them then share them online?

yup but i ain't sharing

Yeah i figured as much, no wonder they had to take a different approach with the 3ds

People say the latest security feature is back-ported from the switch because it was.

Mm, no. The 3DS has CTCert, which is used to sign the device ID which is what allows the console to connect to the Nintendo Network. If your device ID gets banned (022-2812), the console is permanently banned. The only way to "unban" it is to inject an unbanned device ID and its corresponding CTCert into the ITCM of the banned console. They also have to be from the same model, otherwise NIM won't allow eShop access.
