A few thread I've seen for swapping to a larger sd card recommend backing up the emuNand, copying the contents of the sd card to the new sd card, and then injecting the backed up emuNand to sysNand.

Is there a reason for the back up and injection if a system is running a9lh? I'm assuming that with a9lh and CWF on SysNand that there is no need to mess with emuNand any more. Some feedback I've gotten is that the EmuNand backup and re-inject is there to protect the your saves in the event of a problem. But what problems can occur by copying over the Sd card data?

I've got a perfect answer for you that doesn't involve deleting your emunand or SD card at all, unless you want to prioritize it for something else.

    Anyways:
    1. Have your new card on hand but not in the system yet.
    2. Backup your current SD card on the computer.
    3. Insert card back in the 3DS
    4. Launch Emunand9 during boot.
    5. Press select to dismount your SD card.
    6. Take out your card and put new larger card in the system.
    7. Select format card without emunand.
    8. Once it is done formatting you can turn off the system.
    9. Transfer SD card backup from computer to your new card.
    Hope this helps!

Assuming you are set up via plailects guide, Just format new SD card, copy contents over to it. Done. Dont wipe the original card until you know the second card works :)

also if its a large card like 64GB or 128GB+ format fat32 with 64k clusters

Directly from the 3DS using Emunand9

Im not sure if there is a 'best' to be honest. I did it on the computer and it worked fine. I dont think there is any harm in formating it on the 3ds though

No harm whatsoever. And it is better to format from the 3DS as it will be formatted just the right way from the system it is going to be used on. Plus saves from having to use a confusing formatted on the computer and trying to figure out how to get Fat32 on larger cards.

So not only is it better to format on the 3DS it is much simpler as well.

On a fresh // brand new SD card. That's fine.

On an SD Card that has had redNAND//emuNAND, the best and most proven method to work that doesn't cause issues down the road, is to use EmuNAND9's "Format SD (No EmuNAND)" as it properly removes all traces of emuNAND//redNAND.

Fair point there, mine was definitely a new out of package card. Makes sense to remove a former red/emunand properly, if there was one previously
