Is this more-or-less complete now, or is it still in beta stages?
I would say it’s still in beta pretty much. According to the official blog posts the last release is still the 4.5 that was previously mentioned here on GBAtemp as news also.

It might be so that the forum linked here as source contains some later published betas or other info, but any main releases should show up on the blog. Therefore I guess these are fan (? they might be official and in the game but I didn’t download, someone please reply) translations of the beta.

How is it looking now? Haven't played it since Mario and Luigi who was unplayable.

BTW, his name is Hiei, not Heie.

The latest release (Demo 4.5) includes 3 characters (Mario, Luigi and Diddy Kong) as well as 3 stages (Onett, Tree Top Town and Yoshi's Island). Over 50 stages have been made though, and 8 of those are by me

wouldn't it be better (and quite a bit more logical) to finish the game and see how well it is received as a final product before working on translations?

Damn, still not working on a DSTT.... I'm wondering why not even ONE homebrew works! (Even Moonshell and DSOrganize aren't working....) Commercial games work like a charm, but homebrew doesn't... :wtf:

It works on DSTT you just need to boot it thru Dsorganize
