New fiscal reports are in, meaning that the time has come once more to pore over dozens of official documents and pieces of information about how the game industry is doing. Nintendo has released their financial briefing for the past fiscal year, with one of the major reveals being that the Nintendo Switch has outsold the Nintendo 64. Another interesting tidbit stems from the sales document, showing the incredible popularity of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Since its release in December, the game has sold 13.81 million copies. Living up to the name of “Ultimate”, the latest Smash Bros. game has surpassed even Super Smash Bros. Brawl as the highest selling franchise entry. Brawl previously held the record at 13.30 million units. And if you’re going by a single video game release, Ultimate is also now the highest selling fighting game of all time. Super Street Fighter II sits at a higher 14.05 million, though this counts every major re-release of the title, as opposed to Ultimate’s single release, while Super Smash Bros for Wii U/3DS combined achieved a whopping 14.85 million sales, though when separated, they’re at 5.36 mil (Wii U) and 9.49 mil (3DS). Nintendo itself considers these games to be separate entities, due to differing content between the two.

And this ain't the end. It's still selling and will outsell even the combined values for SF and Sm4sh.

I think this is the second game on my Switch that I've hit over 100 hours with (first being BoTW) and I don't plan to put it down anytime soon.

Keep in mind that countless Switch owners had it pirated.
Had they bought it, boy, the numbers would be huge!

I get the angle you're going for, but it's not meaning anything here, man. This isn't saying Ultimate is better than Melee by critical opinion, simply that it's selling more.

Yeah it's better. Way fewer broken character combos and vastly superior overall balance.

Be careful, bashing Melee on the internet is like painting a bull's eye on your back :creep: I agree, Melee is a broken mess, people are so determined to defend it, it's almost like a cult.

    And the bad news?

Tbh, I never really got all the fanfare surrounding Melee.

It's a dated game, to my knowledge the game certainly isn't super balanced, given how it's the seeming starting cause for the "we don't use items in matches" gimmick (which I just find a shame, items are always tons of fun in Smash, but I don't play it competetively) and Fox seemingly dominates the games' tier lists.

Ultimate just feels much more balanced, to the point where it doesn't really matter who I pick (hell, I can pick Pichu, resident shitty character nobody liked from Melee) and win a couple matches.

Combine that with an in my eyes a really comparatively... lackluster character cast (no foreign non-Nintendo IP fighters, which are really the cool draw for me ever since Brawl had Snake and Sonic) and you have a game I just can't understand the hype around outside of nostalgia.

People idolize it because it was as close to competitive as you could get in a series that wasn't meant for competitive play. Now that Nintendo has finally somewhat embraced the idea, things are a lot closer to balanced. They just need to make some adjustments to online play modes, and it really will be the Ultimate version of Smash.

You don’t seem to understand, I don’t like Melee. The only reason I play it is because of the story mode thing

Which you didn't exactly specify in your previous post, so yeah, that was on you.

All you literally said is, "It's no Melee", but without a reason, I'm not a mind reader you know.

Yeah, pretty sure all the love stems from it being such a major source of nostalgia. I think the competitive players also enjoyed the things like wavedashing and such, which were techniques they were all familiar with after years of playing. I mean, I love Melee, and its a fantastic game, but it's something I go back to maybe once a year, just to remember it for fun. rather than play it constantly to this day.

I do miss the Adventure mode, though.
