Hey, just putting this out here. Of all the info that's been released so far regarding SSBU, not one source has yet confirmed what controllers it supports. Since not all Wii U games even from Nintendo support Classic Controllers, I think it's good to put this to rest: SSBU does have Classic Controller support!

Source: PDP (Performance Designed Products). They've announced the Wired Fight Pad, which is licensed by Nintendo and coincides with the release of SSBU. It'll have GameCube controller inspired design and plugs directly into the Wii Remote, much like a Classic Controller. Press release can be read here: http://www.joystiq.com/2014/05/26/enter-the-super-smash-bros-melee-with-gamecube-inspired-control/.

This means TvC and Tekken TT2 arcade sticks will also be compatible. As will an actual GameCube controller either modded internally with a Classic Controller circuit board, or with an adapter like the Mayflash or Extenmote.

That's great news. The gamecube controller is my favorite. Just when I decided not to buy a Wii U. Ugh, maybe I'll jump on it soon.

Seriously though, my buddy and I went through the aisles at the local GameStop to see what Xbox One and PS4 have to offer. Nothing groundbreaking yet. Looking at Wii U, some goodies for sure, but again nothing groundbreaking. SSBU and MK8 though... I think that's enough to justify buying a console, especially since Wii U is cheaper than either Xbox One or PS4.

Should really pick up the MK8 bundle and get the free download game like Zelda WWHD or NSMBU. Great value.

Groupon has it refurbished for $180. I was going to buy MK8 separately.

The controller that I would use for Smash on the Wii U is this baby here
looks good, is like a classic controller, but really wireless ...and is a hori, so would probably feel good too

...the only problem is that I don't seem to find it anywhere :/

Been hunting for that since 2012. Not a single one in sight. I found it easy to import the HORI Tekken TT2 arcade stick for Wii U, but that? No luck.

Don't be fooled though. It connects to a Wii Remote just like a regular Classic Controller. Nothing fancy about it. EDIT: Just to demonstrate: 51O1lxrgY+L.jpg.

ohw  ...it was being advertised as wireless and no pic of it in the internet shows a cable ...I guess I was fooled by the residual amount of info available..
Still a interesting controller ...bugs me why it's so rare ...(not even hori minis are this difficult to find..)

To use the Wii Classic Controller you may as well just use the Wii U Pro Controller then.

I guess this could mean a start for the Wii U supporting GameCube Stuff. Now I can play Super Mario 64 with better ease.

Since when is having more options a bad thing? That's a key point in this discussion, since we're talking about a fighting game. Each and every player has his or her own style and having Classic Controller support only means more people will be able to enjoy it the way they prefer to play.

See my reply above... Way to miss the point. As I said in the first post, Classic Controller support opens up the gateway to arcade sticks and modded / adapted controllers. I can definitely see people playing SSBU in tournaments, especially since Nintendo will host a tournament at E3. If you've seen any fighting game tournaments, you'll have noticed every player has their very own style of play and controller to suit that kind of play. To you it may be the Wii U Pro Controller, to me it'll be my Tekken TT2 arcade stick. Since Wii U doesn't support any other controllers, this is the best we can get. Might as well embrace it and be happy more people can enjoy the game even if you stick to just the Wii U Pro Controller, which by no means is a bad choice.

The best for tournaments would be if the game accepted controllers to be plugged on the front usb ports, not sending inputs wireless...
..even with it not looking that difficult to implement, this is the least likely thing to happen... (but would be cool)

Yay for better control support! :D
I still think the Wii U Pro Controller sucks(C'mon, it is a mutant Xbox controller with a Nintendo sticker glued on it. :hateit:).

No it isn't. Here's how it came along:

Sega (Saturn 3D / Dreamcast) > Nintendo (GameCube, Wii U) > Microsoft (Original Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One).

I'm just grateful that they're both using the controller layout that Sega once used because it's far better than the layout of DualShock controllers.
