Gaming Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Comet Stars

I'm on the second world and 20 stars in the game and have most of the comet medals. I was just wondering how long it takes before the prankster comets start appearing. Do I have to wait until towards the end of the game or is it completely random? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that its random, as im at the end of world 2 with all the comet medals and still no comets.
