I need some help deciding on which Mario game to get for the kids' Christmas gift.

The kids are 8 and 10 and have played most of the old GBA SMB games.

I was leaning towards getting Super Mario 64 because it is considerably different from the SMB games. But I've also read that New SMB might be the best game in the series.

    Thanks!

If they havn't played Super Mario 64 before then personally I'd get that. It's a real gem of a game and a landmark title; definately a must own. It's a bigger and longer game than New SMB and there are a stack of DS exclusive features and mini-games thrown in for good measure as well.

New Super Mario Bros. is a great game but it's definately not the best in the series, it can't compare to Super Mario 64. New SMB is a solid platforming experience but it doesn't really do anything new despite what the title says! New SMB is a lot easier than any of the older Mario titles so this might be a good thing or bad thing for them depending on how your kids coped with the other Mario games.

At the end of the day both are great games so you can't really go wrong, though I'd go with Super Mario 64 DS. ^^

agreed. Mario 64 one of the most revolutionary games ever made. Although I love the additions to the DS version, the control isn't up to par.

I thought NSMB was too easy, too simple, and too short. Although it's fun, it's no Mario 64.

plus, Mario 64 should be really cheap now.

I'd have to say Super Mario 64 DS. For most of the reasons already said.

I had more fun playing NSMB than Super Mario 64. NSMB has better replay value I think. The final choice is up to you but I'd get them a Supercard DS and... well you know the rest of the story.

one big point goes to the NSMB to its mini game multiplayer, that SM64 doesnt have(multiplayer that is, because it has in single player only)... i love playing those mini games against someone xD such fun!

But i agree with the rest of everyone [IMG]

NSMB for DS, Mario 64 for the Wii Virtual Console. That's what I did at least. [IMG] I love NSMB even though it's missing awesome secret levels. Haven't played much Mario 64, yet, but it wasn't anything special in the beginning. Let's see when/if that changes...

    Thank you for your responses!

I'll run out tonight and pick up the Super Mario 64 DS like I planned.

I guess the kids will have to wait for their Slot1 carts to play NSMB.

    Thanks!

I hate 3D and the repetitiveness of getting stars in Mario 64 however NSMB was easy.....like UBER easy...but still fun and the multiplayer ROCKS

I would have also vouched for NSMB. If they're young kids and never played a mario game before, this definitely is the choice, and you will share with them the same first video game memories most gamers have : 2D sidescrollers.

True, NSMB is simpler, but for us experienced gamers only.

EDIT : oh yeah, and multiplayer FUCKING ROCKS in 1 card only mode, and fucking SHINES in Mario vs Luigi mode, easily my favorite DS multiplayer game along with mario deathmatch in 3 on 3.

I owned the SM64DS version while it was good, if they had released the NSMB game at the same time I would have opted for it. I lived and breathed 2D side scrollers back in the day! And of course they were a bit easier simply due to its nature.

NSMB was the reason I got the DS. I'd say it's the best platformer ever.

It's very good, but best platformer ever? Super Mario World takes that title for me and NSMB doesn't really come close to it. It's more on a level with Bonk.
