It's a typical Conservative policy. The long-term goal is that in a generations time the only people with good a education are those that come from wealthy, middle class backgrounds (ie Conservative voters). People from working class backgrounds will never have the opportunity to be anything else. It wouldn't do for the plebs to get big ideas.

Of course deliberately 'dumbing down' a large proportion of the populace is a fucking stupid, arrogant and egocentric thing to do but as I said, it's typically Conservative.

Is it not in the best interest of a country that all it's citizens are well educated and not just the wealthy ones?

Yeah, because it isn't like Labour allowed the working class to get used to not having to work due to benefits, and therefore giving them no incentive to better themselves.

It's just like Jesus, he didn't heal the lepers for free, because that would give them no incentive not to get leprosy.

Those people wouldn't have wanted leprosy in the first place, whilst benefit scum are more than happy to leech.

edit: unless I'm not understanding your post.

The UK is frigging broke. Where the frig do these students think the money is going to come from. Big bulletin, there is no money, there never was any money. The government just made it up and now the bill has come in for their irresponsible vote buying splurge. Now since the UK is broke it doesn't matter if you burn all the cars and bust all the shop windows, hang up side down from the lamp posts, while proclaiming allegiance to Carl Marx, There's no money, no credit. People are going to have to just suck it up and pay for the shit that they want. What the hell happened to England anyway? They went from being a world power to vertically a 3rd would country in the spam of a generation because of Socialism and corrupt politicians buying elections with goodies for the public.

I think the word you're looking for might be virtually, I guess you might be a product of George Bush's No Child Left Behind programme. As for the monetary savings, several economic institutions seem to think the way this plan is structured it won't actually save any money or cut the deficit. That and the fact the country actually needs an educated workforce to drag itself out of a recession which was caused by the under regulation of business and a greedy, anarcho-capitalist financial sector.

But the solution is not simply to remove benefits, it's to invest in getting people into work. The amount spent on benefits and student grants pales into insignificance when compared to the amount of money robbed from the country by big businesses exploiting tax loopholes, a situation which the government it too chickenshit to address.

As for the wider political situation in the UK, both parties in coalition have shot themselves in the foot. If you like what the coalition is doing, you'll vote Conservative, if you don't, you'll vote Labour. So who's going to vote for the Lib Dems? They've traded a sniff of power for decades in the political wilderness, and they've united the Left vote in a way which has seriously undermined the Tories to an extent whereby the only possibility they have of getting into government in 5 years time is if Scotland becomes independent.

I think were missing something here though,
How are the working class supposed to be able to afford to better themselves. Its about private investment i guess for familys. But the generations after will be the ones that suffer the most from this decision.

What happened to Jody McIntyre was shameful, and the rozzers involved should be investigated and reprimanded. He was involved in peaceful protesting. However, I think the rioting students should have felt the full force of the riot squad. Rioting isn't protesting, and rioting does no favours for the cause. It simply turns the general public against ALL the students, including the ones that were actually involved in peaceful protesting.
