Apple has announced today that Steve Jobs is stepping down as CEO of Apple effective immediately, replaced by COO Tim Cook, who’s been serving as interim CEO recently. Jobs isn’t completely out of the picture, though — he’s becoming Chairman of the Board.

Here’s the letter from Jobs “to the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community” distributed over the newswires this evening:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

    Steve

    I lol'd.

It could be because of the cancer. I thought he had cancer or something.

I guess it's a shame, despite the fact that Apple products are pretty much crap to me.

BZZT! He was given sick absence leave for cancer 6 months ago, or so. He officially resigned his CEO spot today for a board chairman spot.

    Link?

I don't really care much about Apple products but I guess it'll be a shame to see this guy go (being CEO and all). I'd love to see what improvements this may have for Apple though. Now for the time being... meh.

EDIT: Well then again he's not exactly going anywhere... just literally stepping down. Still... meh lol

Maybe iStuff will include more features and less of the extortionate pricing and fewer lawsuits?

    Not likely. [tn=100]http://pix.gbatemp.net/151372/trollface.jpg[/tn]

[IMG] Won't be the same anymore.

He was the face of Apple. I now wonder how the next keynote will be.

Oh well, at least now he can rest more knowing Apple has another good CEO~

Engine Room with Cyan, watching him learn.
Maybe they'll take a more game-centric focus now. (Steve has resisted this)

That absolutely scares the crap out of me. If they released a console, it would cream their competitors. That means our beloved Nintendo.
