    i have 4 games:-
    1) gris - it is a cracked game by codex and it has cracked steam files in game directory
    2) final fantasy 7 - an original steam game
    3) ni no kuni 2 - an original steam game
    4) elmia - an original steam game

if i run gris and steam is running in the background then i am unable to run final fantasy 7 and ni no kuni 2 and i am stuck on the steam popup which says preparing game. the popup shows, then goes away, then comes back, then goes away and it's stuck in a loop and the games dont start. i need to completely exit steam by closing it from the icons in the lower right and then i have to reopen steam and then both steam games work when i run them

if steam is not running in the background when i am playing gris then final fantasy 7 and ni no kuni 2 will work when i open steam. if a cracked game doesnt have cracked steam files then it doesnt affect steam if it's running in the background and i can play steam games after i exit the cracked game. the weird thing is that not all steam games are affected by gris if steam is running in the background when i am playing gris. elmia works ok and it starts after i exit gris

what is going on and why am i having this weird issue? it started happening yesterday. i have been playing a mixture of cracked games and original steam games for the past 10 years and i have never had this issue

steam is frequently getting updated and recently they redesigned the library gui. i don't know. it look like that the latest version of steam doesnt work well with cracked games that have cracked steam files

I don't know anything about cracked games specifically, but I can tell you that I had the same thing happen when trying to test a modded "Fallout: New Vegas". I was in the middle of putting my mod list together, and needed to check to make sure that everything was working before I kept going, so that if something was broken, I'd have a smaller pile of mods to sift through and find the problem.

I thought that a mod had broken my game, but I just needed to turn Steam off completely and restart it. I think the problem was simply that I didn't have Steam running when I turned on the script extender's custom game launcher. That can cause problems if you forget to make sure that Steam is working first.

This all happened just a few hours ago, so it may be similar to the issue that you're having. If it isn't the same, the only thing that I can think of is to make absolutely sure that your cracked game can't access the internet in any way, in case it's still got some sort of "call-home" type of DRM.

Cracked games are COMPLETELY irrelevant to Steam games, they are in different directories, all files share nothing in common between them and so on, what "crack"s are is basically a tweak in the code so the game runs independently to Steam/DRMs/CDs so you can install/run it as standalone, so no, having cracked games and normal paid games doesn't cause any issues whatsoever.

Are you sure you haven't done anything to Steam or the installation of whatever you are trying to play? Try reinstalling the games that cause issues for starters if you can.

i know that the files of steam and the files of the cracked game are separate but it looks like steam is knowing when i am running a game that uses cracked steam files. i am getting the steam overlay popup in the lower right telling me that i can press shift tab when i am running a cracked game that uses steam files. that overlay is coming from the real steam. it looks like in the newest version of steam there is a clash if i try to run a cracked game that uses steam files before i run a proper steam game

the issue happened on both my laptops. i newly installed steam and final fantasy 7 on my other laptop and final fantasy would not run if i ran gris before it

Disable the overlay first of all then. Also, if you added a shortcut to the game in your library (you can add non-Steam .exe files to Steam's library) just remove it. Another thing you can try is simply getting a different version of Gris from another group since it could just be that specific one you got was bad.

i already disabled the steam overlay. i didnt add gris to the steam library and i ran it separately. there is nothing wrong with gris. it works perfectly. i guess it was cracked in a way which messes up steam

btw i also ran a plague innocence and it also has cracked steam files. the steam overlay was enabled and it showed in the game. after that i quit the game and i tried to run ni no kuni 2. the game launched but it froze on the black screen. the same thing also happened with final fantasy 7. i disabled the steam overlay and then i ran a plague innocence while steam was running and then i quit and i tried to run ni no kuni 2 and final fantasy 7. both games worked. i thought that disabling the steam overlay is the solution but then both ni no kuni 2 and final fantasy 7 wouldn't launch when i ran gris first

conclusion: it's random and what happens is different in each steam game. thus from now on the best thing is to completely exit steam before i play any steam games

i want to ask something. can a cracked steam game seriously mess up steam and completely damage it? or it cant and everything will be fine when i completely exit and restart steam?

Steam can only be damaged if the installation of Steam itself gets corrupted, but for those cases most of the time Steam will fix itself upon launching it, that's why it does a verification every time you open it before it logs you on if you've noticed. Worst case scenario you have to reinstall Steam, big whoop, it's only like 170MBs:P

maybe just don't have steam open when you play the cracked game? i remember way back when i used to pirate steam based games it would give me a bigass disclaimer to not have steam running

Don't remember any disclaimers like that honestly and been pirating stuff since like 2002 through LimeWire and whatnot (good times...) and never had an issue with Steam and pirated games as long as the patch was properly done, half my games are pirated right now and don't have issues, so really, could be a bad patch since oversights happen. What you might be thinking of is the "block this game through Firewall" probably, which is to prevent it from going online in the case it tries to connect to a DRM.
