Not my cup of tea as I'm a GameCube layout guy but I'm sure some of my fellow Steam Deck owners will be happy with a legit first party controller 😀.

Great stuff! I want one. I love Deck's touchpad-based controls and would love a controller that's lighter than that and does the same, especially if it could connect to consoles.

However, I am mainly a mouse and keyboard player, so my best use case for it would be to play first-person perspective games that have no mouse and keyboard support. The problem is that almost all PC games do have it, so if the controller were limited to Steam Input again, I wouldn't find it too useful as it would only work on a PC. My original Steam Controller is just sitting there, unused, because of that, and its odd design choices

I do hope that their slip-and-slide thumbstick design was revised to be less crap, too. Not a complete deal-breaker as thumbstick grips can be used to overcome this, just like I did it on the Deck.

I'm not sure about this one. The shape doesn't seem like it would be as comfortable as the original Steam Controller. Not enough for my fingers to grip onto. And the (right) touchpad placement is not ideal for games requiring a lot of camera control.
I appreciate the addition of a D-pad though, that was the main thing preventing the Steam Controller from being a good all-round controller.
I think the best thing honestly would have been to ditch the left touchpad and the right stick, to have a more reasonable layout that doesn't require stretching your thumb at uncomfortable angles. I have not once thought "if only the Steam Controller had a right stick", every game that uses the right stick uses it for camera control or aiming, which the touchpad is just better for, so that's the last thing they needed to add. And I never really found a use for the left touchpad. I guess it can be useful to have extra button mappings on a radial menu, in MMOs and similar that use the entire keyboard. But personally I find trying to play those games with the steam controller isn't that enjoyable anyway. It's usable, and it's a lot better than a normal controller, but the controls are just too complicated. The main reason to use controller over kb/m is convenience and comfort, and the convenience is lost when you need to memorize multiple layers, button combos and radial menus just to have everything mapped. It's the kind of thing you might try once for the novelty and go right back to kb/m. The Steam Controller is great for a lot of things, but there are only so many buttons.

this looks like that old Photoshop meme where they just took a steam deck and removed the screen

my thumbs are tiny and gross and those analog sticks don't look comfortable, I struggle to reach them on the steam deck smh

Agreed. This thing looks very uncomfortable to use, especially the joystick placements. Cmon Valve, you can do better.

And they probably will, since this is unofficial and unannounced.

The ergonomics look fine. I'm starting to think that some of you don't own Steam Decks. I'm not a fan of parallel sticks but everything here looks fairly standard. You may have to adjust your thumbs a bit each time you want to use a trackpad. Then again the trackpads are a bonus, not the focus like with the first Steam Controller. I would love to see some third party company make a GameCube layout version of this controller.

Looks pretty solid, the Deck took a bit of getting used to but feels good enough to use. I have two concerns though -

-This image seems to depict the LCD Deck's sticks instead of the revised OLED version. The LCD sticks felt a bit slippery and were prone to nasty discoloration just from regular use, on the touch-sensitive surfaces. I hope they switch them out.

-Haptics are weak on the Deck, they're handled by the same linear actuators that simulate trackpad clicks but aren't nearly enough to feel like "proper" rumble. I have to imagine they'll use the same shortcut here - it would be a bit wasteful to have 4 sets of actuators, 2 for trackpads and 2 for grips. Sony's DualSense is still unrivaled when it comes to haptic feedback.
