RIP StarLite DS 0.03
2005813919812070896_rs.jpg
Alright so i guess we all saw it coming... nobody can make a starcraft ds homebrew game and hope that blizzard doesnt notice XD They probably downloaded the beta versions to see how good it was looked hahaha. The Cease and Desist letter to these programmers after they recently updated to version 0.03 with multiplayer support.

The developers have posted on their site today saying this:
QUOTE said:
"For legal reasons, we must abandon this project."

They have now ripped down all traces of their unofficial DS port of Starcraft and i guess we had our hopes up for a while that maybe this homebrew could be successful or raise a flag to blizzard to start porting games to the ds already =P As a sidenote, since they got C&Ded does this mean that its illegal to be hosting these homebrew nds files now?

Maybe they issued the C&D because they're working on Starcraft DS? They have stated that they currently have three teams working on different games. One is the new WoW expansion, one is SC 2, but they haven't said what the third team was working on. Most people think it's Diablo 3, but that's just speculation.

uh.. change the gfx?? other name.... done? the engine is there!
I guess you're right about that part... they could always just make it cow-craft or something XD
It was a pretty sad engine that they were still working on... =\
marines walking through buildings, stacking, units getting stuck, etc.

I think some of their in-game dynamics were wrong too.. i coulda sworn back in the day you could make a barracks next to a mineral field.. just not a command center.

This is most unfortunate, that project had a wealth of potential. I hope they continue to work on it in the background and change the name to avoid detection.

This is exactly why people shouldn't make their own homebrewed ports. It is pretty disappointing though. I was kinda looking forward to it since I've never got a chance to play Starcraft before.

Whether Blizz was going to make a DS port or not, a copyright holder is obligated to protect its copyright consistently or they risk losing enforcement rights. Blizz had to either grant the StarLight team a license or allow others to port wherever they wanted. You can't C&D some copyright violators and let other slide.

I MIGHT me confusing this with Patent law. My apologies if I'm just talking garbage.

This does not mean Blizzard is making Starcraft DS. This just means their lawyers do their job. They don't pay them to sit around. Pretty standard intellectual property protection. How ever, they should port Starcraft 64 and add touchscreen controls dammit.

BOOOO Grant the team a Licence!!! I've loved blizzard games for a long time. Orignal warcraft, starcraft...WOW. It sucks that they aren't letting this project continue. THese people arent selling starcraft, and blizzard isnt losing out on anything by them putting this game out. Blizzard should have sent these guys a friggin paycheck and said "complete this for us" and then we would all be happy. But instead the lawyers and happpy and we are all pissed.

If it makes anybody feel better, it was never going to work anyway. Ripping graphics out of a game is one thing, making a full speed RTS is another.
