Square Enix wants to launch a new Final Fantasy once every year or two.

This, Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase told GameReactor, will keep fans interested in the role-playing game series.

"[For] the current generation console, Final Fantasy XIII was obviously the first game, and personally I think we took a little too long getting it out," he said.

"When you think of Western AAA titles like Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Assassin's Creed, they seem to work with a lot shorter turnaround - they make a new game in one to two years. That is something we need to follow up, because that seems to be the best way to keep our fans interested and attracted to the franchise."

Final Fantasy 13, which launched in Europe in March 2010, was the first in the series for the current generation of consoles. Final Fantasy 12 launched on PlayStation 2 in Europe on 23rd February 2007.

Kitase admitted Square Enix "learnt a lesson" from the game's long development, and is happier with Final Fantasy XIII-2, which launches early next year after 18 months of development.

Square Enix are already on a two year per team cycle but that's Kingdom Hearts, spin offs (Versus), etc.

Not sure of that conclusion. There are AAA games that take 5-6 years to develop (and maybe even longer to even start a new game) and they still have a strong fan base.

JRPGs are a dying genre outside Japan.

I'd rather that they put years of effort into one AMAZING game, than multiple shovelware in the same amount of time.

I'm not a fan of JRPGs. But It'd be interesting to see FFC getting released before I die.

    No kidding.

    FFXXX too.

    Lol.

Is anyone else stupefied by this comment? Their example of a good game with a short development cycle is a sequel to an already existing game that had much of the atmosphere of the game already made for it to use. What about a completely new game, with a different atmosphere, and is not a sequel?

They should just release a successor to DQ 9 THAT isn't an online MMORPG or whatever, I want one DQ VIII style. I don't care how long they work on it, I want it.

Yeah, like major Zelda game (WW: 2003 ; TP: 2006 , SS: 2011) or Dragon quest.
Square enix just want more money faster x) (just kidding!)
If they are good game like almost all kingdom hearts, I'm fine with that.

Kingdom Hearts is literally a dumping ground for Square Enixs failed Final Fantasy ideas.

i agree the pretty of recent games has made it happen so. CoD, assassin, and many others coupled with the above mentioned reason that the prev ff was delayed alot. as long as its good, let them roll it out and actually 1-2 yrs is not bad

This is just going to result in more half-baked titles, I can feel it.
Miyamoto is known for saying "A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever", made famous in particular by the infamous delays for Ocarina of Time.
Of course, Nintendo has all the time they need to produce their BIG titles like Skyward Sword, Super Smash Brothers Brawl or Super Mario Galaxy, I'm not sure Square Enix with their current track record has that luxury any more.

On the other hand, titles such as Majora's Mask and Super Mario Galaxy 2 expanded on a previous title, like a complete reworking of the same game. Is that how Final Fantasy XIII-2 works?

Let's think of it this way, Battlefield, Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, so called AAA titles of the west by that article, they're more like "short novels" by their genre so they don't take as long to develop.
RPGs by nature, western or japanese, are "very long novels" so they should naturally, take much longer to develop as you have to rely less on an engine and more on the story and how you work with it.

RPGs trying to compete with other genres isn't going to hold up well, sadly.
