Square Enix considered Final Fantasy V and VI on 3DS

Remember how earlier this year we ran a story saying that Final Fantasy V and VI might never see the light of day on the Nintendo DS because of technical issues? Well, all hope might not be lost for handheld remakes of these two awesome classics -- Siliconera spoke with Square Enix's Shinji Hashimoto at E3 about the possibility of bringing these titles to the Nintendo 3DS instead, and he didn't rule it out.

"No decision has been made," he answered. But added that "Rather than creating [Final Fantasy] V or VI for the current DS we want to take a look to see how 3DS does, how it evolves, and then make a decision."

All signs point to the 3DS being yet another major success for Nintendo, and the hardware is certainly capable of doing both games justice -- let's hope Square Enix seriously considers making this a reality!

FFVII was also released for PC and wasn't published by Sony...SE owns all rights to the final fantasy franchise and can do what they want with it.

on topic: I've wanted to see both FFV & FFVI remade for a long time so hopefully this finally happens.

i think it's only logical...FFI and FFII came out for Gba. III and IV for DS. V and VI should be on the 3DS.
VI has always been my favorite Final fantasy thus far...

Can't agree with you more GameDragon, I'm currently playing through it casually right now. Such a wonderful game, I'm currently in zozo.

III and IV on the DS were mainly facelifts, the GBA did indeed get FF 1-6, but they were mainly just ports. Face-lifts for V and VI would do wonders for the imagination on a new console!

I didn't really enjoy the GBA ports too much. The extras were good, but everything else about the games felt toned down, only because of the capability of the GBA. DS version of FFIV did the game justice in my opinion, so here's hoping the same treatment will come to V and VI.

While I and II were indeed remakes on the GBA, and the res on the DS.

Weren't I&II just ports from the PS1 versions?

I'm not a huge fan of the graphical style of III&IV on the DS, so if they change/upgrade the looks, this'll be awesome. I absolutely love V, and while I've never gotten that into VI, it does seem like an incredible game from the little experience I've had with it.
