This came first, and has a better UI, but ZXDS has a more accurate core emulations and it also emulates 128K models included the AY sound chip and supports almost every type of tape files.
Definitely you can play almost every Spectrum game ever created on ZXDS (even though it still lacks a real UI), while with SpeccyDS you are limited to 48K games, no AY soundchip emulation and very limited file support.
SpeccyDS is on the other end more user friendly, with nice file browsers and customizable controls schemes.
So which one is better for you ?

@A Divine Unicorn if you have GBA capability Elite has been ported for years:
    http://www.geocities.com/quirky_2k1/games/index.html

There was also a few other versions at one time but they seem to have gone, a quick search of a homebrew site should drag it up though.

Also if you like elite can I suggest you check out nic's (one of the people behind xvid builds and whole host of video stuff) opengl version of Frontier: First Encounters:

wow! thanks for the hookups! i'll check those out. i was searching last night for Elite cuz i dug up my old palm pilot and remember playing this pretty cool homebrew called Space Trader and it reminded me of Elite, but the palm project got canned (major bummer) so i was reading the Elite wiki, and i stumbled across mention of play on the spectrum.... remembered spectrum emus for DS, so i came here.

i tried playing on my ds, but apparently i have no idea how to play. hopefully these links you supplied will be more newb oriented.

    thanks again.

I wonder if this plays Grimm's Fairy Trails?

(Yes, this was just a gratuitous post to get me to 100 so that I could chekc out the marketplace forum. I am probably one the only Americans to have had a ZX Spectrum back in the day, though. Unlike you Brits, though, I always recognized the ZX as the total piece of crap it was and is.)
