Yeah, they're noticeably nicer than the DSL...better bass, and they don't sound as cheap and plasticky. They can also get a bit louder. But really, it's not like it's an amazing improvement or anything.

yeah a lot louder and also you can mess with the audio in a lot of ways its fun. i am teaching my friend how to play drums and using the dsi sound and earphones i can slow down a track without altering pitch so he can play along and learn drum fills to his favourite songs very easily while not making the music high pitch or low pitch.

I haven't made a direct comparison between the two, but to my ears the DL Lite sounds fairly ordinary on headphones using both my Sennheiser CX300's and my Vsonic R02 Pro 2's. Tested using 192kbps MP3's under moonshell 2.05.

I'm possibly biased, as I'm comparing the NDS to my iRiver and Cowon DAPs.
