It seems a patent filed last year by Sony was recently published by the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service (KIPRIS) for a new type of cartridge storage device that many believe to be a game cartridge. Interestingly instead of using a contact pin type cartridge used by the Switch or other media, Sony appears to have come up with a 40 pin 1st gen iPhone-esque type solution. Do you guys think this will lead to a switch competitor, or just a random patent Sony filed? (Like their direct-to-brain interface patanted in 2005 https://arstechnica.com/uncategorized/2005/04/4785-2/ )

Maybe they're doing another Xperia Play type gaming smartphone? Those seem to be all the rage right now, and at least Xperia Play had a proper physical controller layout.

I bet that the device has an arm processor and storage and you insert that cartridge into a gamepad device that's just a display, buttons, and battery. And one could hope for a dock for the ps4/5 to play the game or games on that cartridge on the tv.

Betcha they wanna jump on the Nintendo hype, PS Move / PlayStation Classic style, this'd end up being a Switch clone.
Betcha it'll be a mediocre, half-hearted at best, like PS Move and PlayStation Classic.

Betcha this forum'll praise it though.

Not getting my hopes up, but this was exactly what I was thinking and they could also have the game slot built into the PS5. No dock or cord necessary.

Welp, rumor didn't last long. Reminds me of Labo.

Nah, none of that. Sony just hasn't lost hope that they'll create the next memory card standard. Ever since the Memory Stick almost won out, way back when, they haven't stopped trying.

Why patent a new form of cartridges? Is there something wrong with the cartridges of the Switch, Vita, 3DS, or DS? They all seem solid to me: physically small, able to contain a lot of data, and easy to pop in and out of their systems with that satisfying click and nice spring when you push down to eject them. What more could or should be done to how these cartridges look and function? I don't get it.

As long as they make any good games for it that are viable and don't rely on bullshit gimmicks. The PSP was the serious handheld at the time.

Exactly, the PSP Vita made games that were not well marketed or targeted to the right demographic.

Following on from Veho's comment above yours if you control a standard you get the royalties for people using the format, monies for making it (or allowing others to make it), control over the format (if you control it then you can say to the, largely theoretical, fainting parents that are terrified their children might see someone's bare knee set that there are no knees here, similarly as you own all the tech and specs those filthy hackers have a harder time). Sony has kind of got close on a few things before, and even when they did not necessarily become industry standards (because nobody desperately wants to work with Sony) they still made a fair bit from such endeavours.
Theoretically you also could gain some perks -- if a current dominant format is limited in size, speed, capacity, electrical power required... you could dodge those as you have your own, and enforce minimums (you can bet someone, somewhere stuck an old 64 meg SD card in their "that is rent for several months for me" camera and subsequently bothered them about it failing to work as well as the super fast SDXC that most people are otherwise using. If you make your own format then that should not be a problem). There have been some cases of this in the past, none of the them from Sony though and a lot of the "we want monies" stuff above instead (it is probably why there are several very jaded and cynical people here).
