The long and puzzling saga of the PS3's now removed backwards compatibility with PS2 games may have just added another chapter. Japanese tech site Gigazine recently uncovered a patent filed by Sony Japan in February 2009, which appears to outline an "adapter" that could serve as a bridge for older generation games (e.g., PS2 discs) to be played on current generation consoles (e.g., the PS3).

We've contacted Sony for a comment on the patent, which was filed before Sony's John Koller definitively struck down the possibility of backwards compatibility on the PS3 last August. It's worth noting that the filing doesn't explicitly state the device's use for PS2 games on PS3. But, c'mon, what else could it be talking about? A UMD adapter for the PSP Go? Actually, now that we think about it, that might just come in handy.[/p]

seems kinda weird to hook the ps2 up to your ps3... y not just plug your ps2 into the wall?

Edit: now that I look at it, it is apparently an adapter just for ps2 discs (and probably the necessary hardware for a ps2)

Sony is just a motherfucker idiot. First PS3 has backwards compatibility with PS2, then, they quit this option to new consoles, they say they PS2 compatibility won´t back and now this? Fuck you.

I'd definitely buy an adapter if it lets me play PS2 games on my slim PS3.

    If it's something else...

    Nah.

Sorry, Sony. You're behind a generation. I already have a PS2. no need to re-sell me another one [IMG]

I'm more than sure that it's for playing Intellivision cartridges on your PS3.

It sounds good for the people that used to have their PS2 but I think its just better to have the PS2 so you have full compatibility and everything you need its already there.

When Sony made this product they knew what they were doing. Don't underestimate them, the PS3 was originally built to play PS1/PS2 games due to backwards compatibility. Sony is showing most evidence that their consoles were made to be backwards compatibility in the first place.

They ditched the backwards compatibility because PS2 is STILL selling...
Once it dies with the fishes, i guarantee that they shall add PS2 Backwards Compatibility.

OR, That they are saving backwards compatiblity for future system updates to patch a really big exploit or hack...

Wait I recall something about programmable touchpad surfaces a while back

Also did I imagine the master system adapter for the megadrive or the master system adapter for the gamegear or the gameboy adapter for the N64 (be it official one aimed at pokemon or the more unofficial stuff)?

No it doesn't, all it shows is a company applying for a patent, doesn't mean they'll ever use it...

Also the PS3's own processing power could be used to upscale the picture to 1080p

If this is ever released, it won't work, because where do you still find PS2 games? Only in some shops, they've still got some, but most of them are already scrapped. One of the only reasons to make this adapter would be to get all the ps2 games sold.
