More likely back-end upgrades/updates. These happen periodically with any large scale online operation. See the weekly maintenance windows on most MMOs.

Cause it has absolutely NOTHING to do with the new firmware upgrade being released tomorrow that is for the Cloud Computing Game Save Storage....Nope, not at all....

The thread title is misleading given the context of Sony's AP efforts as of late. A better title would be "PSN down until 10pm EST for network maintenance". (doesn't sound as exciting though, lolz).
