Chemicals, TV, sales and marketing to bear the brunt of global cut-backs

Sony will not bury the axe into its games division as the company prepares to slash some 10,000 jobs from its global entertainment empire, Develop understands.

Information of the company’s restructuring operation suggests that the television, marketing and chemicals business will bear the brunt of the cut-backs.

Sony declined to comment when approached by Develop.

Targeting a six per cent reduction of its workforce (about 10,000 employees), it is believed that Sony will remove about 5,000 workers through the sale of its chemicals and LCD business.

New CEO Kaz Hirai, who has a mandate to slash operating expenses by a third within twelve months, said that Sony’s focus will be on three divisions: Digital imaging, phones and games.

But within these sectors, certain jobs (particularly outside of development) are still expected to be vulnerable.

A new report published today on Brand Republic claims that Sony Europe will cut about 1,000 staff – predominantly in marketing and sales roles if their jobs are connected to weaker divisions of the business, such as TV, or if their role is duplicated elsewhere.

According to Brand Republic: “A Sony spokesperson has confirmed the official 90-day consultation is likely to heavily impact on sales and marketing-related roles as Sony seeks to cut-out ‘duplication’ as part of its new plan”.

Sony Computer Entertainment would not comment on the matter of downsizing its Europe marketing and sales arm.

The company is battling, and in some cases outright denying, rumours of layoffs at certain facilities such as a broadcast cameras factory in Pencoed.

Sony’s financial turmoil was laid bare when executives projected it would make a £4 billion loss for the financial year ending March 31st, a staggering cost that marks the company’s fourth year of red ink.

Finally some good Sony news for a change. Everything rides on the success of the Vita and the PS4.

Will Kaz pull it off? Will the Vita trump 3DS and Mobile? Will PS4 be able to compete with WiiU and Xbox 720?

You tell me.

They chose 3 strong areas to focus on at least. Sony holds a pretty good name in those sectors, be interesting to see how it pans out though.

When the hell did Sony started to make chemicals?

QFT. I never even heard of Sony brand chemicals o.O .

wow I was literally joking with someone about this a few weeks ago :( I didn't think they would have actual mass layoffs.

Well, my belief is that you gotta be careful about what you think of. The moment you think of something bad happening, it'll find a way to manifest itself.

looks like Sony has really been hurting from their TV division mostly. TVs are expensive to produce, and if they don't sell, you stand to lose a lot.

Sony needs a new Walkman.
QFT, and they need to start being more imaginative as well, the recent ones look just like any other ones on the market. What happened to the good old walkmans that look like some kind of jewellery?

I've heard that Sony plans to divert some funds from these cuts to the Playstation Division, so they can buy off some exclusive titles for the Vita

Seem almost like cheating

If they had included a PHONE into the 3G enabled Vita then they would be out selling EVERYONE right now. That is what we wanted.

IF SONY HAD ANY SENSE THEN THIS COULD HAVE BEEN THEIR NEW WALKMAN.

Not just a poorly implamented 3G addon just to confuse the crap out of the average consumer.

Can't the other companies do that as well? Rather they chose to is another matter...

Correct, I know Microsoft has bought off a few Xbox 360 exclusives.
Tales of Vesperia (in the west) being one iirc
Stupid Microsoft.
Alan Wake being another. Didn't even want to play it on my PS3.. Yeah right.. Idiots..

OT: This was coming regardless. Costs have been too high and something needed to be cut. At least the profitable area, esp. gaming is going up :)

Indeed. They face stiff competition from the South Koreans and their strong Yen is making things worse.

TVs are mainstream home appliances. Almost every household with electricity has one. Sony has a tendency to place a premium on their products, TVs included. And even a $100 price difference could make all the difference.

Once, I was looking to buy a 32" HDTV for my bedroom. As a silly teenager with a tight budget, the $499 LG panel easily won me over from the $599 Sony panel. Choosing between the LG panel and the Samsung panel proved a lot more time consuming however.

I'm not saying Sony makes bad TVs. Just some times, cheap is better

but they can't, because Sony and Ericsson parted ways already. but yes, i suppose if they managed to make the Vita a phone (Sony Ericsson Vita, or SEVita) as well as a kickass gaming machine, iPhones are gonna get some serious competition. assuming Apple doesn't sue (or outright buy) Sony in the process. you know Apple. biggest bully of em all.

what wrong with Sony televisions? I prefer Samsung myself but I've used their televisions and had no problems. If anyone makes shitty televisions it's Sharp. Their televisions suck ass.
