Sony expects PS5 shortages to continue into next year

Those of you who have been waiting patiently for the Playstation 5 shortage to end may have to wait a little bit longer. In a briefing with analysts, Sony's Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki warned that due to the high demand and shortage of essential components like semiconductors, they would unable to provide an estimate as to when their supply issues might clear up. “I don’t think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand,” said the CFO, according to several anonymous analysts from the call who spoke to Bloomberg.

However, it seems the PS5 is keeping on pace with its predecessor in terms of sales. Sony's latest earnings report claims that the PS5 has sold 7.8 million units by March 31, 2021, while Playstation 4 sales hit 7.6 million in the timeframe. Based on this, Totoki is confident that demand will stay high, even as their earnings report shows lower numbers of monthly active Playstation Network users as COVID-19 lockdown restrictions loosen--109 million this quarter, down from 114 million the previous quarter. “We have sold more than 100 million units of the PlayStation 4 and considering our market share and reputation, I can’t imagine demand dropping easily.”

Is it even worth investing right now considering most games are being delayed ,probably a good time to catch up on the back log and just wait out the storm

Good thing I don't intend to buy a PS5 anytime soon, I won't have any money anytime soon, here in Brazil consoles are extremely expensive so I was hoping for an excuse for the PS4 to last a little longer.

Why is an Intel not a good buy ? Does that mean AMD and Nvidia are the best ones ? Sorry about the off topic but I am curious.
yeah, at the moment anyway. intel makes their own chips and have run into issues getting their newer chip proccesses working for a few years now. Buuut next year they might have something that can compete. Maybe. Probably. Intel 11th gen are still good chips, but amd is cheaper and wins at nearly every metric (power, efficiency, power consumption, ect.).

AMD relies on TSMC to make their chips (and ps5/xbox uses amd chips, so same for them), and TSMC have been killing it with newer tech. but. various raw element shortages and insane demand are causing issues. They're at like, 110% production capacity or something crazy.

Intel is still making chips in-house on the old 14nm process, and AMD's current chips use 7nm(+?) proccess (next year they move to 5nm i think?). So intel can't compete for the price and might not be able to for a few years. Nvidia is a bit more complicated. plus, their graphics vs amd graphics have a bit more of a "what're you using it for" as part of deciding which is better. but to over-simplify, basically the cutting edge pc+console chips are just made at the one place, TSMC, right now.

Super loyal customers getting their console is still far better than retard scalpers getting all of them and reselling them back to you at an absurdly high price.

Sure, but the people who bought off the first scalpers are just as much to blame.

y'know, the image in the article itself is REALLY ironic
"Play has no limits"
unless... y'know... you couldn't play in the first place

This thing have any games yet? I know there’s a PS5 exclusive expansion for Final Fantasy, and they announced Gran Turismo 7 for next year, but not familiar of anything else.

Returnal, Spider-Man Miles Morales, Demon's Souls. That's all the exclusives for now, though obviously almost every PS4 game plays best on PS5 too.

Astro's Playroom (lol).

But yeah, the lack of exclusive games is clearly there.
The main selling point for the PS5, as far as I am concerned, at this point in time, is to be a replacement for my PS4 slim so I can play PS4 games with better performance. That's it.

However, it's not worth it paying ~$1,500+ (what it costs over here right now, thanks scalpers) for a PS5.
I will wait however long I have to in order to buy one at MSRP (even if it's at the stupid high local MSRP of $800)

I wonder whether someone will actually take advantage of this semiconductor shortage to create their own semiconductor manufacturing company.

I definitely would if I had the $.

Well at least those who don't have it can wait for the upgraded PS5 with a small chip that comes on 2022. Funnily, the Series X is common enough in my country but I am not touching it given how awful my Xbox One X was and the series X doesn't support kinect anyway.

On gbatemp I'd expect people to be upset they can't spend $500 on a launch console so they can put it in a cupboard just in case there is an exploit in a few years that lets them get free games.
What? You think that I'd need an exploit to pirate games to justify buying an expensive new console? No, I just want more games that I'd actually like, and I'd like them to be positioned at reasonable prices. I think I can safely say that nearly everyone here who doesn't want a PS5 thinks like this. Fuck off.

Wow, you're kinda angry.

I think you underestimate the number of people on gbatemp who buy launch consoles and leave them in their cupboard.

The shortage isn't entirely down to the number of fabs, demand for laptops and tablets for at home teaching is a unique situation which is coming to an end. We've been in similar positions before.

https://tedium.co/2016/11/24/1988-ram-shortage-history/

If there is a rush to build too many fabs now, then they won't come online until the shortage is over anyway and then there will be an oversupply which will damage future investment.

The current players are all talking about the money they are spending on fabs, but they were going to build those anyway for newer nodes. Where they are built might change based on government subsidies etc.

I wish every PS5 scalper a very shot in the neck.

Really? You think that the correct punishment for someone buying something to sell at a profit is the death penalty?

That's horrible things to say. Ouch, that's hateful. If you wish then you would be a coward and worse than scalpers are. Think about it. They are the cowards and they sucks. Don't give up and fight them until you win.

Look at me. I finally got it after 4 months struggle. I beat them. So you can do that too.

Anyway.. They don't deserve those things anyway. Its okay to hate them for what they did but wish them a very shot in the neck ? That's like murdering and hateful. They are still human being. Come on.
