The only reason PS2s are still in production is because there's still a demand for them. People still buy them.
It's actually pretty impressive that the PS2 is still alive after nearly ten years.

And 2010 will be the "year of the PS3" for one reason, and this one reason only:

What's with the haters? Let it die slowly. PS2 had some sick J-RPGs and good action games. (Xenosaga anyone?) I don't know if the PS3 is still making Sony lose profit, after all the price cuts, but continuing support for PS2 is the best thing for Sony. Sure it means thinking that sick titles for the PS3 are just shitty ports for its predecessor, but from a business standpoint, they're selling a low-budget gaming console, that will definitely give them profit if you consider, par example, how many people want to buy a PS2 who used to own an Xbox or Gamecube only (a lot of people I know did that, and bought a PS2 in the end).

Just mah 2 cents.

The sooner it dies, the sooner the great games get released to the PSN for cheap as classics.

Meh, Sony saying "This will be the year of the PS3!" is pretty much a no-brainer. Not that it's true, it's just that they want to say they're good. Why anyone is taking this without a grain of salt perplexes me.

Although they've got some stiff competition from Nintendo here. Nintendo had an off year this year in terms of console gaming (the DS got quite a few big titles), but look at this year. The Grinder, Red Steel 2, NMH 2, SMG 2, LoZ Wii 2, Monster Hunter 3 (for us Americans), Gladiator AD, Sin and Punishment 2 (for us Americans), etc etc. The PS3 had a great year this year, but Nintendo must surely have next year in their grasp.

some gaming companies are gone already eg.) Square for FF13 as they (i believe) ran out of ideas on the PS2 but some remain such as Summon Night was it?
