For the past 6 months, I've been using a cheap laptop I bought from a friend and it always gets the power from being plugged into the power point since using the battery isn't good enough. Yesterday, I had to do a big video encoding job and it lasted 8 hours (I just let it do it's job and I went to work while it was running) then I turned it off. The next day, I decided to move the laptop to the living room and tried to turn it on. Nothing. Panicking, I decided to plug it into a power point and it worked. After doing as few work on it, I decided to move the laptop to my room while it was still on. Nothing wrong. I've been doing it several times but this time, when I removed it from the power point, it just switched itself off. Is this something to do with the battery and I should order a replacement and if so, how do I prevent it happening again?

Its most likely your powersupply and/ or battery. If you or your friend have never replaced the battery, id suggest getting that either way. As for the power supply problems, it could be the battery, that holds no charge or it could be that the plug is bent so much, that the wire is cut inside somewhere.

Do this, take out the battery, and the laptop in. Move the power cord around, near where it goes connected into the laptop. If it shuts off, its probally what i said, where its cut from the inside somewhere. Check the Female port on your laptop, to see if when moving the plug, it shuts off (had the problem with a laptop of ours).

The cut power suppply could be responsible for the battery not charging, and could explain the un-explainable laptop not turning on.

Try that, and report what happened

Wait, so you're saying, try the laptop without the battery?

If the laptop will work on external power, but not on battery power, either the battery's dead, or the internal charging thingamajig inside the battery is dead. Either way, it's battery replacing time. On the other hand, you didn't give enough details, so it could be anything, really; from a dead wall socket to a seriously disturbed software powerdown thingy.

Details? Well the laptop is a Compaq N610c with Intel P4 and 512mb ram and 40gb HDD. How do I make sure something like this doesn't happen again? Take out the battery next time because I don't find myself using the laptop on the go as it just sits in my room or if I want a change, I'll move it to the living room.

Not that kind of details. Details on when it works and when it doesn't. Judging by what you wrote, I think the battery is dead. If you don't intend on taking the laptop anywhere, just keep it plugged in all the time. Only remember to save your work when you take it from room to room

My laptop started playing up months ago because of the battery. I had a totally dead battery in it and it refused to turn on. I removed the battery and it works fine without any power. What I did with the battery is remove all the contacts so the bottom of the laptop doesn't look like it has a hole in the bottom.

Yep sounds like the battery. Laptop batteries only last about 2-4 years (dependant on the type of batttery), or slightly less if you always run the laptop off the mains and don't run down the battery on occasion. Replacements don't come cheap, it would've cost £80 to do mine but seeing as I hardly ever use it away from a power socket I didn't bother. Took the old battery out and I've been running the laptop from the mains ever since. Plus the batteries are rather heavy, you'd be surprised how much lighter it is without one
