cracker made a patch for starfox to allow D-pad instead of touchscreen.
here:

control hacking tutorial

anyone ever thought of making a custom key handler for other games?

Call of Duty series are Unplayable is its current state.

or a "Pac N' Roll" D-pad hack would be nice.

actually "Moon" and "Dementium" could use a D-Pad hack, but there less shooting and more story and puzzle based.

What? Since when is it unplayable?
Call of Duty is using the same control scheme that most DS FPS games use, which IMO is one of the best FPS control schemes ever (excluding touch screen ADS, which I kinda dislike).
Even if you disagree with me, why would you want non-analog aiming for an FPS? Seems pointless to me, since you'd lose quite a lot of precision that way.

But on the other hand, Pac 'N Roll with D-pad controls sounds plausible, as it looks like it could gain precision and control from using the D-pad.

Not to be rude, but demanding someone to make a hack for you will likely get responses such as "do it yourself" or just "No." You should ask, I've seen many occasions where people were yelled at for that.

Aiming with a D-Pad is the most uncomforable thing ever. You don't want that, trust me.

And the second touch-screen makes the best aiming method for FPS. After a mouse, of course. I can't see how it would make games unplayable.

So, I don't think anyone will make a code for that since few people dislike touch screen aiming. About the Pac-Man thingy, it'd be nice if someone made that.

i could not find a comfortable way to hold the ds for FPS,
the ds keeps falling out of my hand, L button is out of reach,
i cant aim because my hand keeps moving slightly, and
the precious seconds it takes to "L..i..f..t. T..h..e. S..t..y..l..u..s"
means death before i can even find the little prick.

i even ordered a hori stand and finger stylus's, nothing seems to help much.
on the other hand Goldeneye and Metroid work fine in button mode for me.

is there some special technique one would employ?
does one lay it on a table or balance it on stomach.

1. Increase the sensitivity, so you don't have to lift as much.
2. Adjust your grip so you can reach the L button.
3. I don't understand how the DS can fall out of your hand. I have small hands and a DSi XL, yet I never drop it while I'm playing. In fact (just to emphasize that you're doin' it wrong), there's a 7-year old girl at my school (as my school is K to 12), she has a DSi XL, and she doesn't have any problems with holding it in one hand while using the stylus in the other.

exactly. i have big hands and a tiny DS lite. so your comments aren't subjective.
if you ever played a Gameboy Micro you know what im talking about.
my index finger has to make a crooked hook shape to reach the L button

where is the weight of the DS supposed to rest? the pinky finger or the palm?

Solution: get the bigger DS lol. After all there are two to chose from

If you were aiming with the d-pad, how would you move? Surely it'd be better to aim with A/B/X/Y buttons than d-pad...
i thought you could have it like DOOM, where D-Pad moves the crosshairs,
and some button moves forward. you don't really need strafe function.

DPad UP = look down
Down = look up
Left = turn around counterclockwise
Right = turn around clockwise
X = Move forward
B = move back
Y = Shoot
L = strafe
R= strafe

or you could have Metroid Mode, L & R turning, and Left/Right as Strafe.

the gbatemp post for the Zelda hack is old and outdated.
the links are broken. i just know WiiBricker is going to ask so here:

zelda D-Pad hack IPS Patch:
http://toenailed.game-hackers.com/
(theres also a heroes of mana Dpad hack)

its also integrated into the latest cheatcode database:

The link in the post Schlupi linked to works fine....
the original post and link by Heran Bago is outdated and has problems.

you need the Updated patch by tonailed, it adds:
Spin Slash, Rolling, Side Slash and Map view button re-mapped
.

Well, for most people, the palm is on the side (or not touching) the DS, while the index finger is on the L button, the thumb at the D-pad, and the remaining 3 fingers holding the DS up.
That's how I hold mine, although again, I'm using a DSi XL, so there's a possibility that the bottom-left corner of a DS lite would poke into your palm with this grip.

@the comment about Doom: Those controls are wrong. There aren't any Doom games (or at least official games) with those controls.
You can't even look up or down in Doom.
Just as a reference, here's the SNES controls:
[title:Doom SNES controls]Up/down: Move forward/backward
Left/right: turn left/right
A: Interact (doors, switches, etc)
B: Run
Y: Shoot
X: Change weapons
L/R: Strafe
You're also wrong about the Metroid controls. The Metroid Prime DS games used ABXY or the stylus for turning, while the Gamecube games used left/right for turning, R for free-look, and L for lock-on (holding L will also make left/right strafe). The Wii version used the pointer to look around, and the 2D games obviously weren't in 3D so they didn't have/need strafing.

Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure the only game I know that uses the D-pad for turning, B/X for moving forward/backward, and Y for shooting is the DS version of Asteroids in Atari Greatest Hits V1.

my point is, you dont need to aim Left or Right or strafe.
you can just move the character until crosshairs line up
with enemy. (ala. doom)

why cant D-Pad be pure Camera, and have any old button be movement.

in "Goldeneye:rouge agent" my setup is,
D-Pad = Move Camera,
X / B = Walking
A / Y = Strafe

but in Army Men soldiers of misfortune, there is no aiming.
the D-Pad moves character and stylus shoots.

either method works great.

That's how I hold my DS Lite as well. Works fine for me, works perfectly for FPS games like CoD and Metroid.

3 Fingers?? my middle finger cant even reach the bottom of the ds.

but anyway, your argument is invalid for several reasons

#1. on a bumpy Car/bus/train ride the stylus will shake around slightly making it impossible to aim.

#2. playing a DS in public is embarrassing enough. whipping out a stylus in public just makes you look like a Real Goober. using Stylus ruins your Macho Manly image. which is the whole point of playing a "Killing War" game in the first place. to look cool.

#3. why not have the option to play it any way they want. (ahem Goldeneye!). its not going to ruin the game for anybody if theres more options.

#4. Playstation and Xbox usually dont have Mouse or Touchscreen, they use Controllers which is how most people play FPS. holding a PS2 controller with both hands.

#5. just like the Starfox & Zelda D-Pad thread there are always whiners and nay-sayers. it dosent mean its not a good idea. if somebody wants to play it a certain way let them have it.
