My 780 is still good, and I haven't even started OCing it yet. If I were to upgrade, I'd skip the 1080 and wait for the 1080ti.

I'm not sure why so many people say this. I understand wanting to wait a few more years until your current gpu gets more and more outdated, but why wait specifically for the 1080ti? Why not until the 11 or 12 series come out? Every year there is going to be a better gpu, and I would think that the jump from 1080ti to 1180 would be much bigger than the one from 1080 to 1080ti

So you'd think, but the performance gap between the 980ti and the 1080 is not that big at all. However, the difference between the 980ti and the 1080ti most definitely will be, if it's anything like the 780ti vs the 980ti. Look up some performance benchmarks and reviews, and then decide for yourself whether or not you think it's worth upgrading to, or if you'd rather wait for the next one, but I would prefer to get more bang for my buck. The difference between a standard card and a ti really shows.

Another way you could think of it is, would you rather wait 9-10 months, or 18-20, before you upgrade? If I really had to upgrade, like if my card decides to die on me, I'd like to get a new card sooner than later, of course. But in this case, since I'm able to hold out for a little bit, why not?

I could go on, but I think you'd get the gist of it by this point. Really it's up to when you're comfortable enough to upgrade, and if you deem it worthy to do so.

Uh...the difference between 980ti and 1080 is much, MUCH larger than the difference between 980 and 980ti. While the architecture of the 980ti is improved (GM204>GM200), it actually has a LOWER base clock than the 980. The GTX 1080 has both better architecture (GP104 Pascal) and base clock, which is about 500 mhz higher than the 980's, and 600 mhz higher than the 980ti's.

We're almost at 10 Teraflops now. dayum.

It just confuses me how GPUs keeping improving by leaps and bounds but CPUs seem to be stuck in a rut.

I looked at PCPartpicker and it says it's compatible, but to make sure, do X99 motherboards support them? For example I have an ASRock K1ller 3 Fatal1ty mobo.

You know something is right when a $380card beats a $1000 card. GTX1070 ftw!

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I see, if what you're saying is true, something below $380 and yet beating the performance would be heaven, kinda doubt that but I guess time will tell.

Looks like I *might* be wrong. Just a rumour so take it with a pinch of salt.

Wasn't enough gain in reviews over a 980ti to encourage me to make the switch. Ill wait to see what comes about by December or if they release a ti model.

Really? Everywhere I've seen or heard of these two cards, the 1080 was always the most favored purchase.
it doesnt matter is people are favoring the 1080, they simply don't have the money to spend $700+ on one graphics card, the price for performance gets significantly worse the higher end card you buy
You have to find the sweet spot which is why the majority of people will buy a 1070 instead

Just take a look at a recent valve hardware survey

1080ti will probably come out in 2017. But if I were you, I'd stick with that 980ti for at least a couple more years. The only reason I'm upgrading now is because my current GPU is a reference GTX 570.

If SLI had better stability i would do that but honestly, with my setup, i still push 60fps+ on anything I play, im not a resolution gamer, but a fps gamer. 2k+ monitors are just stupid expensive for what they are for the time being. 1080P upscaled to 1440 is about as far as i go anyhow. The biggest advantage tho is cuda core video rendering.

A few days ago, I ordered a used GTX970 for $235 off of eBay to replace my GTX670. I upgrade every few generations and one below now current to save money. For 1080p gaming, I find this method quite a bit more cost effective than upgrading every year to the best card. If I was doing 4K or even anything higher than 1080p or ultra widescreen then this would be a different story.

I will be skipping this and the next one or two generations before I upgrade from the 970.

That's not what I meant. I've seen dumb enough people who would still buy a 1080 regardless of whatever survey you'll shove in their face. PCMR is an example. The 1070 is the intelligent choice, but just cause it is, doesn't mean it's why everyone will buy it. And $700+? You do know the 1080 is $600 right? Most of the rigs I've seen on forums and reddit are full of 980's and 390x's, so I wouldn't be surprised.

Of course there is architectural improvements and whatnot, but I was not talking about that at all. Whatever happened to the reason why I would rather wait for the 1080ti over the 1080? Clearly you know better than me about the specifications, however, I base my decisions on how much of a difference I see if I were to actually play a game. The benchmarks and stuff I was talking about were framerate comparisons in games, and that the gain between the 980ti and the 1080 was not enough for me to justify an upgrade, sorry if I was being misleading.
