I like the game. Most people use that one since it is a good game that you can actually enjoy after you use it. In the end, I would see if there was a game on that list that you would like and buy it (or if you already have it, even better!)

Just remember to disable online features, better yet, remove your wifi information from the firmware altogether - you can re-input them in EmuNAND later. Better safe than sorry, you don't want to update beyond 4.5 or get the annoying pop-ups. I personally used Animal Crossing on my exploitable 3DS, even though I don't have a Gateway yet.

EDIT: This site is useful in checking what update partition given games have - I've been told it's reliable and you can sort releases by firmware. Techically you can grab anything between 4.1 and 4.5, but I'd go for 4.5 and get it done in one go.

you don't have to like the game or even buy it.
if you don't know anyone with it, I'd suggest getting it from Gamestop then returning it within the trial period which is 7 days unless it's preowned then it's 14 days. You get your money back, it's easy.

That's a bit of a cheapskate way of doing it, but a victimless crime at the end of the day. I'd do it with a pre-owned copy though, I just don't think it's appropriate to do so with a mint game that someone else might want to buy (then again, Gamestop is notorious for opening the game boxes anyways, so they're not *really* mint, they just haven't been used yet).

I was actually planning to buy Luigi's Mansion, use it to update, and then return it, but when I checked the local stores' policies more carefully, I found I would only have been able to return it for store credit, not cash money. So I bought it used, knowing that I could get at least the same price for it on eBay after I updated. But then I really liked the game so I still haven't sold it yet :)

I signed up for a Gamefly free trial, rented Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D (and some other games I really just wanted to play), updated to 4.5 with DKCR3D, sent back all games before the free trial expired then cancelled the subscription.

    :)
