Hey guys,
few questions to keep it short

- What do you guys think about this? http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.48225
- Any alternatives suggested?
- I've been reading that the one I listed is upgradeable. could I install any payload versions on it (hermes, or whatever) .. or is it just upgradeable through the developers themselves?

I think that's about it

Thanks in advance

depending on the chipset any old dongle will do.... for the price of it you couldn't really build a cheaper one from a development board and it comes in a nice encasement as well..... there are so many clones out there that the only thing that really matters is upgradeablity...... theres a few reviews and posts on that page at the bottom you might want to read and also check out the dongles website.... good luck

Only one question remains. Could I install any version on it or does upgradeable only means versions from the team themselves?

well, I'm looking for one thats upgradeable and can accept any hexes (meaning, upgradable by anyone, not the specific team itself)

So can anyone make a recommendation?

you may just want to get a development board then..... it won't be all wrapped up in pretty plastic case but it'll be fully upgradeable downgradeble sidegradeable and what have you. You can put whatever payload on it when you want it and how you want it. Indeed you in fact are your own support only relying on the kindess of the payload makers to keep inprooving the payloads...... if you are motivated you can compile your own hexes as soon as the code is released or you can wait the 60 seconds or so it takes other people to compile for all the various boards and ports...... get a nice teensy or a blackcat usb....... that way you know what chipset you have for sure and are master of your own destiny

Thanks for the reply!
Would I be able to install hexes easy on my own development board? (couldnt care less about its casing and what not). I'm not really a programmer in any way, if it's something that can be done by an average user, then sure I'm up for it.

Now, where to get one of those? Is there a version number or anything on them?

easy peasy pudding and pie to update your development board.... takes all of about 12 secs..... no programming skills needed.... if you do a quick google search you'll find a billion tutorials and realise its no problems to do..... the board itself is also readily available from many different places... the most popular are teensy and teensy++ I myself have a blackcat usb which works quite well...... great good luck !

FYI, it looks like the device you originally posted can be flashed with any payload, the website mentions Herme's payload, and something about hex (http://www.amazebreak.cc/Download.asp - not original site AFAIK, but a mirror of it because it went down. Also says it supports FW 3.01?). I think you can flash any payload to it.

well, from my understanding, it doesnt exactly flash that payload, but the team has to modify it somehow to work with their device.

I read that people flashed theirs and it bricked, but they were able to recover to the previous flash or something..

Everything I read is from here: http://psx-scene.com/forums/f177/new-clone...749/index8.html

It's one of the links in DX comments..

Thanks SifJar

Gobnoblin, are all of these boards you mentioned have 32kb+ memory?

Edit:
Is this what I'm looking for? (Teensy++)
http://www.pjrc.com/teensy/

from what I understand, it's memory is around 128kb?
also, there are two versions. One with pins and one without. Does it matter which one I get?
Finally, assuming there are not other better alternatives, where can I get it from, as the site I linked two is out of stock til the end of november

Edit2:
So I've been random googling, and I came across this thread.
http://forum.sparkfun.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=21460
So apparently there two different (pinless) versions of the teensy++ 2.0, one that uses AT90USB1286, and the other uses uses AT90USB1287 which adds USB host capablities?
Did I understand that correctly? any idea where to get both versions

it doesn't matter if you have pins or not.... as long as you have the usb connectivity so you can plug it in you are good to go..... good luck
