Now that the Gateway can be used on the N3DS, I was wondering if anyone has tried downgrading their N3DS to 4.5 using the same methods for downgrading a normal 3DS. Is that possible at all?

Yes. Just boot into gateway mode and leave the device on standby, never leaving GW mode.

Probably the lowest you can downgrade N3DS is to 8.1J or 9.0U/E

There's no official version below that which supports n3DS.
