So, anyone know what this is for?

I'm talking about that little square shaped jack with two metal contacts right next to the earphone slot.

    What is it for?
It's certainly not for volume control as there's an analogue method used to change the volume (and as far as I know, there are no mechanisms present for moving that volume slider automatically)... And the DS still doesn't have built in media support so I'm sure it isn't for playback controls.

    So... Any ideas?

(Or maybe it's just a jack for some special headphones I've never seen before. If anybody knows of such a thing please let me know [IMG])

I am just guessing, but I would bet a small amount of money that it is for a headset microphone.

AFAIK it's a microphone port, so slandar would keep his money. [IMG]

Yep, it's a microphone port, if you read the manual, or look at the small icon next to it of a headphone/microphone headset.

Has an external microphone or headset been released yet?

Right right, so I'd learn Japanese just to find out what my DS manual says. [IMG]
And excuse me for not noticing the tiny little protrusion to the side of the headphone icon [IMG]

Also, thanks Darkforce. That solves the mystery.

Who would use that? The mic in the DS is fine.

Is there any type of firmware on the DS that could possibly prevent the usage of VOIP applications from a shell level?

Uh no, seeing as though Nintendo themselves have been experimenting with VOIP on the DS.
