SNES version of Doom will get a "Definitive Edition" release by LRG, with all 4 episodes and a new custom "Super FX 3" chip

Continuing with the announcements made during QuakeCon 2024, Limited Run Games announced a new "Definitive Edition" for one of the original console ports of Doom, focusing on the Super Nintendo release made by Randal Linden.

Limited Run Games unveiled through their social media that they are working alongside the original developer in charge of porting the original Doom into the Super Nintendo back in the 90s, Randal Linden. This new Definition Edition of the original SNES Doom will feature a number of quality of life improvements, which the SNES version sorely needed, as well as some extra features that SNES games never had back then, like rumble and full motion video support.

Some of the new expected features listed by LRG are:
  • All 4 DOOM episodes, including Thy Flesh Consumed
  • Added circle-strafe
  • Performance improvements
  • Monster respawning on Nightmare difficulty
  • Level codes
  • Rumble support via an all-new controller!
  • Full motion video thanks to the new custom "Super FX 3" chip

The most important point of interest in this new release is the new custom-made chip specially designed for this project, titled "Super FX 3", which aims to improve the speed and memory to give the game better performance. While Randal hasn't given too much information regarding this new chip, he shared on X that this new chip is currently FPGA-based, but that the FPGA version "may not be the final chip" itself.

Alongside Randal Linden, longtime Doom developer and modder Cacodemontube was contacted by Randal to work on the implementation of any missing levels from the original Doom and its 4 episodes back into the SNES version, as well as polishing them so that they work within the hardware and space constraints of the original SNES. Cacodemontube uploaded a video going through the hurdles of porting over the missing levels, and it also showcases the full motion video feature that the new Super FX 3 chip brings to the table.

Limited Run Game's Definitive Edition of Doom for SNES is scheduled for a 2025 release with no exact date yet, and will include a custom made gun-metal coloured cart, a poster, a custom retro box for the game, and an instruction booklet, all of this in the standard package.
LRG will also be offering a special "Collector's Edition", which will only have 666 physical releases made, including a custom gun-metal cartridge with blood splatters, and a special numbered certificate to validate it.

Really..? Don't copies sell for a horrendous amount these days? I haven't really looked into it.
i did say "months" after release, i think i saw people claim they saw it up to a year after the cutoff date, but i think they're all gone now and have been for a while, i think like 8 months ago though i looked it up like once on ebay and they were being sold for like $40-60

Tough call here.. Really want this, but LRG can shove it.

You don't like LMG? why's that?

Not a fan of their business model and how they’re overcharging for nostalgia. They are looking for easy money for minimal effort. They’re no better, in my eyes, than the people driving up the retro market.

Do not buy from LRG unless you have the patience to wait over a YEAR to get your shit, and maybe not even after that long.

I bought that Castlevania Switch collector's edition last August and still haven't received it. It's also been quite a while since they last updated me.

...the same snes game? if you mean vs the pc port that's not a fair comparison. gotta compare apples to apples. is this not better than the currently available doom snes releases?

wait, do people not get retro gaming anymore? or collectors/game preserver mentality? what am i missing here?
I kinda get the point @Kwyjor is trying to make, personally when it come to things like this I only find them interesting as "proof of concept", which makes sense when it comes to homebrews, but as a commercial product I don't really see the point of something like this existing. not even from a preservation point of view.

For the reason of “why not?”

It plays on the right strings. From a business standpoint, it’s a great idea. The execution is just terrible. The SNES version of Doom is notorious for being… well… bad. With the way technology has advanced, and what people know now about the technology of 3+ decades ago? Why not fix those issues and give the players a fresh take on that console port? Why not lean into the retro kick and bring something back that has a special place in the hearts of old ass gamers? Vinyl is making a comeback, why not retro games?

All the haters of Limited Run Games need to piss off. If you don't like them, don't buy from them, it's that simple. But stop shitting on them all over this thread please.
Don’t have an opinion or Jayro will yell at you!

LRG had a chance to be great, but they’re just the software parallel to Analogue. If you like them and their products? That’s great. Spend your money how you choose. Doesn’t mean the rest aren’t allowed an opinion against them.

One of the only things I ever ordered from LRG was a physical copy of MRD (Mad Rat Dead) with a soundtrack cassette.

It still took two months to get to my house.

Looks like Star Fox is getting the Super FX 3 and rumble upgrade as well! This could be the start of a nice little trend for retro gaming.
Incredible! The EX showcase got us a solid 20FPS, up from 12 FPS on the original... So I'd' feel safe to assume we could get a locked 30 FPS out of the Super FX 3 chip.

It's not something I would have ever bought
But after hearing stuff about LRG ... I feel mixed about it

On one hand, it's really fucking cool. On the other, it's made by LRG and will be heavily limited on purpose

But overall it's still really great. I wonder if this could be dumped and made into a rom ? I guess the custom SuperFX would need to be worked on specifically, which means that it's probably incompatible ?

Alright if the SFX 3 chip gets worked on and is even adopted by others, that's going to be great. Very cool stuff

Wonder what's happening here... the link doesn't tell anything technical.
I knew that, soldering a faster oscillator to the OG StarFox cartridge it makes it run faster, even with the "old FX chip".

Now, in SNES Emulators, most already offers FX Chip Overclock.

A StarFox with "FX 3" will be what? A complete recode of the game? Just an emulation hack? Overclock speed hack?
Basically nothing new or nothing we've already tried with StarFox?

How will emulators handle a "FX 3" StarFox? How will a SNES handle "FX 3" ?
Post automatically merged:

Oh yeah, I can't wait to grab this new DOOM romhack from somewhere.

I read somewhere that without rebuilding the game the framerate is always going to be the same. The current framerate hacks just run the game at a higher speed, which any PC emulator can do. I would really love to see 60FPS superFX games but if current PC emulators can't do it, I doubt any kind of hardware add-on to a cart can do it either, but I hope I am wrong.

well, I'm the type to buy romhacks that are on a cart, to play on original hardware. usually play romhacks on a flashcart first, but the memorable ones get added to the collection if available.

for me, this fixes doom for a console i still play on. each console has its own feel, so I wouldn't mind every version of doom being updated on each console. the 32x version has a really great mod. Since we didn't get dlc or updates back then, just consider this a "complete" or "deluxe" version being made available.

I'm one of those people who have a CRT just to play retro games. and this doom is far closer to legit, considering who was involved.
