SNES version of Doom will get a "Definitive Edition" release by LRG, with all 4 episodes and a new custom "Super FX 3" chip

Continuing with the announcements made during QuakeCon 2024, Limited Run Games announced a new "Definitive Edition" for one of the original console ports of Doom, focusing on the Super Nintendo release made by Randal Linden.

Limited Run Games unveiled through their social media that they are working alongside the original developer in charge of porting the original Doom into the Super Nintendo back in the 90s, Randal Linden. This new Definition Edition of the original SNES Doom will feature a number of quality of life improvements, which the SNES version sorely needed, as well as some extra features that SNES games never had back then, like rumble and full motion video support.

Some of the new expected features listed by LRG are:
  • All 4 DOOM episodes, including Thy Flesh Consumed
  • Added circle-strafe
  • Performance improvements
  • Monster respawning on Nightmare difficulty
  • Level codes
  • Rumble support via an all-new controller!
  • Full motion video thanks to the new custom "Super FX 3" chip

The most important point of interest in this new release is the new custom-made chip specially designed for this project, titled "Super FX 3", which aims to improve the speed and memory to give the game better performance. While Randal hasn't given too much information regarding this new chip, he shared on X that this new chip is currently FPGA-based, but that the FPGA version "may not be the final chip" itself.

Alongside Randal Linden, longtime Doom developer and modder Cacodemontube was contacted by Randal to work on the implementation of any missing levels from the original Doom and its 4 episodes back into the SNES version, as well as polishing them so that they work within the hardware and space constraints of the original SNES. Cacodemontube uploaded a video going through the hurdles of porting over the missing levels, and it also showcases the full motion video feature that the new Super FX 3 chip brings to the table.

Limited Run Game's Definitive Edition of Doom for SNES is scheduled for a 2025 release with no exact date yet, and will include a custom made gun-metal coloured cart, a poster, a custom retro box for the game, and an instruction booklet, all of this in the standard package.
LRG will also be offering a special "Collector's Edition", which will only have 666 physical releases made, including a custom gun-metal cartridge with blood splatters, and a special numbered certificate to validate it.

You missed the point. Mario 3D All Stars was released intentionally in a limited quantity and now it gets sold for more than it should.

This company is no different they say they care about preservation, yet do the same crap.
3d all-stars was a limited time for "unlimited" copies, it also sold so badly that a lot of stores had overstock of it even months after the cutoff date

LRG just makes an actual limited amount of copies and probably less than they actually claim to make

Super FX 3... By the original creator of the SFX and SFX2...

I'm speechless, and can hardly wait for homebrews to get ported over to utilize this new chip! This could mean we finally get homebrew ports of Heretic and Hexen for the SNES! :yaysp:

Since when is Argonaut involved in this scam?

What did they do?
Just look up why people say bad things about LRG. Knowing that they don't care about protecting the slop they ship out, don't handle things damaged in shipping properly, and my local postal service, I haven't bought anything from them and I don't intend to.

Ironic, I just started playing the SNES version of Doom on my Wii a few months ago. Guess I'll wait for the ROM dump of this new version. Also I might grab a physical copy just for that new SNES rumble controller. Really hoping there will be a way to add rumble support for other SNES games via Emulation.

Indeed, this has nothing to do with "the original creator of the SFX and SFX2".

The source code for SNES Doom has been available for some time now and if someone wanted to make a crappy port of Heretic or Hexen, the lack of a new chip would not have been the principal obstacle.

Really..? Don't copies sell for a horrendous amount these days? I haven't really looked into it.

who even still has a snes and will pay full price for a snes cart! IDIOTS THAT'S WHO
Hi! I'm idiot! i would happily pay "full" price for several games cib(complete in box). not all, but many.

this is more games, more doom, more features. I'm okay with this.

as for Limited run games, I think most people's issues would be fixed if they offered a "will have another run once we meet a certain amount of people willing to pre-order/show interest" for all the games they've ever released.

Sounds like… Analogue? I’d be content if they offered a steady stock and didn’t make us wait like it’s a poorly managed drop. Not interested in constantly “pre-ordering” as a weird way to gauge interest.

ETA: I don’t mind them having a limited edition variant like they have here, but give us a steady stock of a regular edition or something.

It's not, though? It's the same game that's been rereleased dozens of times over already, still playable and readily available, only crappier and with less features.
...the same snes game? if you mean vs the pc port that's not a fair comparison. gotta compare apples to apples. is this not better than the currently available doom snes releases?

wait, do people not get retro gaming anymore? or collectors/game preserver mentality? what am i missing here?

Don't tell me this is some kind of copy protection?
Also there'll probably be no emulator-compatible digital release due to their special chip I assume? That's rather bad news too (for a digital guy like me).
The certificate I assume is just a separate document that validates the limited purchase and version of the product.
Take it like a verified one-of-a-kind item, you can claim a certain letter was written by Kennedy, but without validation, it's worth nothing, something similar applies to limited quantity items.

As for the emulation of the game, it remains to be seen how emulators will handle this new chip.
It's an entirely new and custom chip which was made based on FPGA technology, so it makes sense that the dump of the game won't work on emulators day one, but as soon as emu devs get their hands on a physical copy to study the chip, they should implement support for it later on.

It'd be far better if the whole documentation for the custom Super FX3 chip was made public, and to be honest, it should be a must.
This would open up the gates for a lot of incredible SNES projects down the road.

That is the contradiction. If you want something "better than the currently available doom snes releases", why not just play the PC version?

It's not like anyone's done homebrew using the Super FX or FX2 already. People have already done sufficiently incredible things with other chips. I linked to https://gbatemp.net/threads/develop...-through-the-custom-made-superrt-chip.578979/ already.

I agree but given how it went with Paprium I remain sceptical. :(
I know, different dev but only time will tell.
