SNES version of Doom will get a "Definitive Edition" release by LRG, with all 4 episodes and a new custom "Super FX 3" chip

Continuing with the announcements made during QuakeCon 2024, Limited Run Games announced a new "Definitive Edition" for one of the original console ports of Doom, focusing on the Super Nintendo release made by Randal Linden.

Limited Run Games unveiled through their social media that they are working alongside the original developer in charge of porting the original Doom into the Super Nintendo back in the 90s, Randal Linden. This new Definition Edition of the original SNES Doom will feature a number of quality of life improvements, which the SNES version sorely needed, as well as some extra features that SNES games never had back then, like rumble and full motion video support.

Some of the new expected features listed by LRG are:
  • All 4 DOOM episodes, including Thy Flesh Consumed
  • Added circle-strafe
  • Performance improvements
  • Monster respawning on Nightmare difficulty
  • Level codes
  • Rumble support via an all-new controller!
  • Full motion video thanks to the new custom "Super FX 3" chip

The most important point of interest in this new release is the new custom-made chip specially designed for this project, titled "Super FX 3", which aims to improve the speed and memory to give the game better performance. While Randal hasn't given too much information regarding this new chip, he shared on X that this new chip is currently FPGA-based, but that the FPGA version "may not be the final chip" itself.

Alongside Randal Linden, longtime Doom developer and modder Cacodemontube was contacted by Randal to work on the implementation of any missing levels from the original Doom and its 4 episodes back into the SNES version, as well as polishing them so that they work within the hardware and space constraints of the original SNES. Cacodemontube uploaded a video going through the hurdles of porting over the missing levels, and it also showcases the full motion video feature that the new Super FX 3 chip brings to the table.

Limited Run Game's Definitive Edition of Doom for SNES is scheduled for a 2025 release with no exact date yet, and will include a custom made gun-metal coloured cart, a poster, a custom retro box for the game, and an instruction booklet, all of this in the standard package.
LRG will also be offering a special "Collector's Edition", which will only have 666 physical releases made, including a custom gun-metal cartridge with blood splatters, and a special numbered certificate to validate it.

I have some thoughts about this…..

Will this work on pal consoles? some people want to experience this too!

Will it be emulate-able?

And it should say 2026 (or 2027), it’s LRG
Carts can be made region free, but PAL consoles have the problem they were downgraded to 50Hz.

They're incels? Don't see how.

If folks can be labeled incels, then I guess they'll be called far right next.

I think this is one of the super rare occasions where I actually want to buy something from LRG. I'm gonna keep an eye out for it, unless they forget to make a PAL version.

You don't like LMG? why's that?
Waited four-ish months for the Quake II physical on Switch, got it solely to host LAN parties through crossplay, only to find out that Crossplay doesn't work on LAN. Requested a refund because the marketing was misleading, and LRG denied my refund solely because I'd opened the game.

On top of the prior points made about them, they also claim to only produce as many copies of a game as are preordered, yet they also somehow run a physical store that has copies of these pre-order only games on their shelves. All in all, I'm done supporting this company, they're not a great alternative to proper physical retail releases.

LRG is a "monkey paw" wish from someone wishing for a company to save physical video games.

Mentions maturity…

Uses terminology such as “incels”….

Surely, the irony is not lost on you?

I've heard from others about LRG not filling orders or taking a large amount of time to ship products. I've never used them myself, so I can't confirm. Still, this is interesting news. I'm sure I've said this before, but it's so surreal to see old hardware get so much attention.

At this poiht it will be basically like that custom chip for an Amiga that's basically a different computer you control using the Amiga.

My first thought was that it would be horrendously expensive, but I guess lots of flash carts have had support for SuperFX games for some time already.

Full motion video thanks to the new custom "Super FX 3" chip
And that just sounds like they're using MSU-1.

In any case, my understanding has generally been that while the SNES port of Doom is an interesting technical achievement, does anyone really want to play Doom that way when there are so many alternatives..? And for those who do want to play Doom that way, aren't the technical limitations of the original version part of the "charm"?

That would be like https://gbatemp.net/threads/develop...-through-the-custom-made-superrt-chip.578979/ .

Is it original hardware (what people seem to lean into) if it's just a completely new chip?

One thing is emulating original chips, which is a stretch if you're looking for an authentic experience, but worth the compromise I think. Or using individual flashcards, which can make the experience more genuine - customizing the cart exactly how you want for every single game, for example,

Creating completely different hardware makes actual sense if you want to get a genuine experience?

At that point, if it's just for Doom, use your SNES controller with a compatible device connected to a TV, and voilá. It's different from SNES CD ideas I've seen around, which are explicitly looking for an unique and out there experience.

You missed the point. Mario 3D All Stars was released intentionally in a limited quantity and now it gets sold for more than it should.

This company is no different they say they care about preservation, yet do the same crap.

I can take your money and send you damaged trash way later than I agreed to, charge you too much for it, and abuse FOMO tactics to push you into coughing up money, and do everything to refuse to ship you a working product, using extremely limited stock as an excuse, but then sell extra copies here and there. Disc-based stuff? It will be poorly burnt, the idea of it being functional be damned.

Yes, it's totally "incels" being "immature" about straight up scams.

Don't tell me this is some kind of copy protection?
Also there'll probably be no emulator-compatible digital release due to their special chip I assume? That's rather bad news too (for a digital guy like me).

  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
@K3Nv2, I think the RP5 has had 8GBs for a while? I know mine has 8GBs not sure it's needed for emulation though? Probably 4GBs is enough for 99% of what it's fast enough to emulate? I could be wrong if it can do like GC and PS2 stuff maybe more is needed? Probably stream the ROMs like the consoles did off the drives.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I believe what they do is OS and translation layer (emulator) and the emulator has its RAM like 36MBs for PS2 so like 3 times that maybe as things are shuffled around, a frame buffer and. Load the data from the ROM file into that systems RAM. I think I read that even 2GBs is enough if your just using a Pi for emulation.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
    What's an RP5?

    Raspberry Pi 5

For me it's just an emulation machine

Like a super mini system, I use Batocera as an OS and it's pretty easy to set up, has a ton of UI skins you can make it look almost anyway you want. Still would kill for a WiiFlow like skin (some are close)
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I bought the 8GB model because my thoughts on that is the the difference between the models is like 20 bucks so why not get the good one just in case.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Almost never hear anyone complaining about too much RAM but not enough? Yeah best to avoid that one. Lol
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I did kind of overshoot on storage, a 2TB nvme drive and I think 1TB would have been plenty.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Probably have like 700GBs of stuff on it now, and don't think I can add much more.
