Smash Bros Wii U downloaded via NUSSPLI lags a lot.

So just today I downloaded both Smash Bros for Wii U, and its DLC via the homebrew application NUSspli. But for some reason, no matter if I'm in a fighting match or on the main menu of the game, the game lags a lot. Sometimes, the lag also carries over to other games I downloaded via NUSspli or it carries over to the Wii U menu itself (and some of the applications preinstalled, like the Settings app or the Mii Maker channel). Is this normal for games that were installed via NUSspli, and if not, what's the best way to solve this issue?

I have a 32 gigabyte (Premium) Wii U running Aroma firmware, and I have a TOURO 500 gigabyte external hard drive hooked up to the console via a Y-splitter cable.

Not normal and pretty unlikely that NUSspli is the cause (downloading directly from Nintendo, just like the eShop). Also a corrupted download is highly unlikely (downloaded files are hash checked while installing + decryption should fail).

More likely causes:
- Bad HDD. In case it fits try moving the game to NAND and test if it runs better from there. If it runs better from there try another Y cable, another USB to SATA adapter / enclosure and/or another HDD.
- Some Aroma plugin going wild (eating resources the game would need to run smooth). Try removing them all and in case that works re-add them one by one until you find the bad one.

Isn't installing games to the NAND itself a dangerous risk?

While it's not recommended, you should be fine
This. The risc is in a crash or brownout while writing to NAND. This is not an issue of NUSspli but of the Wii U itself, so it can happen with all software writing to NAND.

The warning from NUSspli stems from a time when it and the CFWs (most people used Haxchi/CBHC back then) where unstable (thanks to the homebrew SDK beeing unstable and people, including me, not knowing how to utilise the filesystem APIs correctly. IIRC @Maschell did a lot of reverse engineering work, then fixed the SDK and told homebrew devs how to use the APIs correctly).

tl;dr: Yes, there is a risc of damaging the filesystem on NAND but it's pretty low.
