I'm surprised nobody on GBATemp has posted about this.

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/smachteam/smach-z-the-first-handheld-steam-machine/description

If this succeeds, we should have more handheld PCs on the market in the future, with more powerful capabilities.

Now some (emphasis on some) quotes from the kickstarter page. There's a lot more info (like production timing, fund usage, board diagrams, etc) on the Kickstarter page for the Smach Z, so go check it out!

Nice concept but very weak specs. It uses an AMD 8330E GPU which even an old intel integrated 4000 GPU beats, and a Jaguar CPU which is also underwhelming, and will probably be weaker than the one that the PS4/One uses due to power consumption.

But those GameCube buttons have me hypnotized into buying it.

Actually, that CPU and GPU in their current prototype isn't the final specs.
They're actually going to be using a currently unreleased (and unfinished) AMD APU and can't reveal its specs under NDA from AMD.

Besides, even if that was its GPU, I found this video after some googling:

Crysis 3 on HD 8330 on low settings around 20FPS.
Not sure how the CPU used with it compares with the placeholder CPU in the Smach Z prototype.

    This looks super awesome.

If the 'handheld' market is drying up, I think this might be the optimal way to go.

plus, think of the possibilities for Dolphin. Melee on the go anyone?

Plus, if you get the Pro model, you can use it as a phone via Skype over 4G connection.

As long as it plays the Dolphin emulator and PCSX2, then I'm happy, but I doubt it since the Dolphin devs are always trash talking AMD products.

Problem with Dolphin is that it's still dual core usage only :(

€900K goal... enough to be more than an interest gauge but not enough for a real device, unless they are just middlemen for something already existing (and things do). Though they appear to already be in with a hardware manufacturer so maybe an interest gauge and a good chunk of a setup payment. Not sure what the stretch goal amounts are but given they bump it to 8 gigs of RAM (from 4), a 1080p screen (from 720) and some more internal memory my chancer alarm has just gone off.

For a device with the dubious claim to fame of being a steamos device.

    Yeah they can keep it.

They actually lost a backer yesterday, and lost a small amount, too.

I think their major problems are:
    1. Windows is behind a stretch goal, so people don't want to back unless it meets said stretch goal.

    2. They don't want to show their current prototype because it's not the final version, making people skeptical and withdraw their backing.

    3. They can't reveal benchmarks because the APU they're going to use isn't released yet by AMD, and so they can't say anything about it.

AMD needs to allow them to reveal expected performance levels, or it's going to fail and then AMD won't sell any of their APUs in the Smach Z, because there won't be a Smach Z.

    4. 4G, but no phone call/texting functionality (Skype can't receive texts, and would be reliant on constant 4G connection)

I think if they added in a mobile chip (for basic and Pro) to allow you to use it as a replacement for phones, more people would want it. It can't add much extra cost because there's $20-$40 smartphones at Walmart with full calling/texting/4G/3G and 480P-720P screens with 512MB-1GB RAM.

Heck, it doesn't even have to be integrated if they could produce a small attachment that connects via USB, like a really slim USB drive.

It looks really promising, too bad it was cancelled 21 hours ago.

    Translation

We got a few fools that were eager to be parted with their money but it seems the world has a shortage of fools right now.

900K is an ambitious price to produce a device of note with, especially if it is built from the ground up, and would likely need far more. [I had always expected they had some private backing somewhere or this was a kind of first round investment alternative]

We really should not have tried this without a solid design. Electronics design can take a while and it is quite possible to spend 2 years making something only to find someone came out with a chip to do it all in the meantime, this is not one of those cases.

We could not get a cnc/3d printer shop to play along and make a shell and/or design a prototype to showcase the capabilities properly.

We were designing a games PC device and did not consider windows because actually I do not know, that was a serious oversight on our part.

Having the top tier backers get things after lower tier people was not a good plan. We are surprised too.

But don’t worry, this isn’t a tragedy muahahaha we got some free advertising and market research.

If the stretch goal is reached, which won't happen since the project was cancelled yesterday (according to the kickstarter page).
