updating HBC is not required, but doesn't hurt.
the update is not even suggested by the automated update feature because it doesn't really add or fix anything important for the Wii, it's only vWii related fixes.

You currently have some custom IOS (cIOS are in slot 200+)
even though you used an outdated syscheck and the information is incomplete, we can see you have an outdated setup.

you currently have :
d2x cIOS v7, which is PERFECTLY FINE for zelda !
what you might want is : cIOS d2x v8, base57

you can follow modmii generated guide to update all your setup at once, or just install one single cIOS.
modmii sounds the better solution to just update everythin

I'm having an issue with Zelda Skyward Sword, the disc preview screen (the first thing you see) is just blank. There is nothing there and upon trying to open it, it just doesn't, it's black even when I open it.

Another problem I have is with Super Smash Bros Brawl. The starting preview screen loads but after I start it, it takes me back to the homebrew channel, I tried a lot of settings but it did not work.

Here's a syscheck that I ran:

if you use emunand, turn it off completely for that game specifically.

The thing is I've never split a wbfs folder cause I my laptop broke and I don't have anything to split with. Can you suggest an alternative or should I just do it at a friend's house or something?
Use WiiBackupmanager to transfer Wii games. Also what drive are you using? A usb flash drive or an external hdd? Is it formatted as Fat32?
Check the hash of the game Skyward Sword to make sure it's not corrupted, it's under tools in the top banner. Do the same for Smash.
Also, both need to be split into 2 wbfs files as stated, Skyward Sword is a ~4.35GB game which exceeds the 3.99GB limit of that fat32 partition..

You don't split the folder, if you get Wii backup manager, you can just split the file into 2 and keep it in 1 folder.

Yes! I use a usb flash drive and it is formatted to Fat32. I have other games that work perfectly such as Dragon Ball Budokai Tenkaichi 2, LEGO Batman 2 , Wii Sports and Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

These are the only two games that don't work. I will try this method and let you know asap.
(Replying to: Also, both need to be split into 2 wbfs files as stated,) Should I have to download the game again to do this?

Well, not all Wii games will work when using a usb flash drive. An external hdd is a much better option.

Yes definitely, as they're most likely corrupt if they weren't split or if you did it by yourself without WiiBackupmanager.
Note: download them first, then transfer those 2 games with WiiBackupmanager ,otherwise if you just copy them to the wbfs folder it will just stop and end both files (Skyward Sword & Smash) at 3.99GB.
You can check the folders of both of these games on the wbfs and see if they a similar size..

don't split the game !
instead, just "transfer" the game, and the tool will split or not the file for you based on its "automatically compressed" size.
Don't "split" or "convert" the game manually yourself, because that's just a door to mistakes from end user !

here is the RIGHT WAY to put a game in HDD :
https://gbatemp.net/posts/7592791

DO NOT USE ANOTHER WAY

Also, don't redownload the games. First, "test" the one you already have to see if they are good or bad dump.
like suggested in a previous message, in Wii Backup Manager select your game and go to option > sha 1 verify. if it ends green, your ISO is good.
You can also verify the game installed on your device (not on PC), to see if it's still good once split. (easy, go to "drive 1" tab (NOT file tab), where you loaded the partition where you have your wii games), click on the checkbox in front of the game and do the verification.

Be sure you don't have emuNAND save enabled for Zelda.
Be sure you have "delete update partition" and NOT "keep only game partition" for Smash bros. when transferring the game to the drive. SSBB has a special additional partition which is NOT a game partition. so, if you choose "keep only game partition" you'll miss data.
